Toned coins

Ok, I know this is purely a matter of personal opinion. Some people love wild toning, rainbow colors, pastels, etc. I have never really understood the love for wild color toning, but I have seen some lovely pastel toned silver and iridescent toned copper that I really liked. But, if toning is in reality just oxidation as some have pointed out, then silver would tarnish to black eventually, right?
At least, this is my school of thought. And to this end, I would totally buy this piece:

Is this what would be referred to a "Black Beauty"? I sure love the look!

Pretty coin, and yes, eventually all silver would go black in time, at least that is my understanding of the process over time on silver.

yes thats correct but that coin isnt black. toned proofs always look black when imaged incorrectly.

I imagine that the Barber quarter has been imaged straight on and with brilliant proofs it is a tough nut to crack to capture color with a shot like this. It looks like the piece is likely deep navy with some green and perhaps a bit of violet when rotated. Theoretically, all silver might oxidize to a black, but this is not the practical case with coinage.

They will tone black if exposed to a toning source long enough. Once removed from that environment, the toning stops. That coin, though, looks blue and green, as Tom pointed out.
