Ugh! Ebay is a love/hate relationship. LOVE buying but HATE selling. Hopefully I'm done selling for a looong time.

It's a great way of wrecking things image I still think Heritage and Teletrade are overpriced on thier premiums jmho
  • Not only that but getting hit with Paypal charges is oh so lovely! Thankfully I am liquidating what was left of my meager collection on eBay so perhaps I avoid the more ridiculous charges to come!

Add PayPal fees to that and you're probably paying around $1300 or so to eBay, if not more.

Now you have to ask yourself if you could have lowered your price realized on everything sold by around $1000-$1300 and listed on the BST for the lower price, would it have all sold quickly and without the pain of eBay/PayPal??? If the answer is yes, or probably, then it seems like eBay is a waste of time for ya. If the answer is no, then maybe it was worth paying for the service eBay provided to you.

I like the BST, but for a lot of items that folks sell, the BST is not good for them. Ebay has a much larger audience. "Widgets" sell a lot better on ebay. Also, for toned items, they usually sell better there than on the BST as well.
Just a lot more eyes looking at everything when using Ebay.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I agree with this comment. You've probably sold close to $10,000 worth of stuff since your last invoice. I think that's pretty good. I wonder if you can have the same type of turn over with a regular coin shop where people come in and browse. You won't get the same audience and you probably will have coins for a much longer period. Don't forget about the rent, utilities, insurance, etc associated with that. Based on that, I think eBay is a bargain.

you must be doing something wrong. My fees were only 123.00. image

  • Sad.. I hate eBay fees..

  • I know alot of peopel complain about the fee's and yes it is a bummer but! Where else are you going to have that big of an audience? You wont reach that many people at any major show, your not going to be able to show that many people coins at any local shop. Ebay fees are similar to any auction house as far as price and considering I can name my own price on the coins I think its really not that bad. The only thing I wish ebay would do is what paypal does, take the fees out ASAP once an item sells so that I dont have 3k invoices at the end of the month.

I don't understand the complaint. $1000 in seller fees, hopefully means more than that in profits, for some sellers it means many multiples of that $1000 in profits. Without Ebay there are no fees, but no profits either.

    I don't agree........

I have profits and no fees.

Making a profit with no fees someplace other than eBay is not necessarily evidence that that profit is more than one would have gotten with fees on eBay.

In a way, it is a like paying taxes. The only thing worse than paying taxes is not having to pay taxes.

Which equates to about 9% of sales. So a $12k sales month and the smiley face means you like the results. Nice job, I hope your profits were nicer.

No way. I want to record one transaction a month, not a few hundred for each individual item's fee.

Not everybody goes for what some folks have to offer and the BST is in no way the panacea for selling coins, collections, or what nots!

I've had two really nice DDO Kennedy's on the BST since Oct last year with absolutely zero offers.

I had a reference to a complete set of MS64 Type B quarters on the BST that ran from July 19th through Sept 4th, again with zero offers until I negotiated them in a trade with a fellow forumite on October 19th.

Yes, the BST is a nice alternative but its in no way the answer to "actually" selling coins.

eBay fee's do suck but at least the OP sold something.

I've thought about that as well but what are they gonna take them out of? Your paypal account or your credit card before you get paid for your item? image

Agreed, but until people embrace an alternative, eBay will continue to have it's way with them...

Unfortunately, ebay fees are often more than profits. The good news is my fees are usually much higher than the OP. --Jerry

I've embraced over a dozen alternatives since I started selling on eBay, for all the good it's done me. I'm through with that, but tell you what- when you can show me a site that performs as well for sellers as eBay does but with lower fees, I'll be right over. image
