Silver roosevelt - dropped "S"?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,625 ✭✭✭✭✭
Someone commented about the mintmark on one of the Roosies that I posted in my "$10 and under" thread yesterday.
I wanted to take a closer look at it as well, so I dusted off the dinolite (those things are nice but hard to keep in focus).

Here's a pic I took. When I looked at it on the PC, I noticed something else going on.....it looks like an "S" on the torch.....do others see that or am I imagining things?
I won't point it out, so as to not influence people.

Very interesting, Ron. I can definitely see it. Could it be a test punch of the mint mark?

    No idea, Paul.
The actual MM is so close to the torch, closer than any I have seen, I don't know....

looks like a missplaced MM. Cool find!
  • Wow, That is a nice find.
The "s" is real noticeable with the dino. Looked at your other thread to see the year.
I like how the Mint mark is almost on the torch.

The application of a Mintmark to a die took a skilled and steady hand.

It was an acquired art, and took time to master.

My guess is that someone tried to line up the puncheon, took a whack, then
    realized it was misplaced.

Then it was punched in the correct location, albiet very close to the torch.

    Just my guess..........

I'm not even sure what something like this would be worth or even if one of the majors would attribute/slab it......

    Wondering.....

Does any service note these on the holders? I doubt PCGS would (and, I'm not looking for a speared bison rerun, just getting it noted without a super name image ).
    Not sure about ngc.

I don't like anacs, but if they would, it would be tempting.....

It will be self-slabbed if no reputable service would slab it with the annotation.

It isn't really an "error", is it? So the error guys wouldn't be any help, would they?
