Baltimore show report

Mrs. 66RB and myself had the pleasure of attending the Baltimore show over the past weekend. Mrs. 66RB is always overly excited about attending any coin shows( image ) and this time was no exception, although I had to promise to take her to a nice dinner and the Baltimore aquarium if she were to accompany me at all.

So, we left early Friday morning around 7:30 for the harrowing 3 1/2 hour drive down from northern NJ. Seems like it is just one toll booth after another once you go into Delaware. We arrived at the Hyatt around 11:15, promptly parked in their parking garage, and made our way over to the convention center.

My forst stop was to see Andy & Alynne Skrabalak @ Angel Dee's to drop off a coin for him to purchase. While I was there I looked through his case and saw a really nice 1912 Lincoln cent in PCGS 65RB that I looked at for about two seconds before deciding I would be buying it. I didn't spend any real time at his table until later in the show as I wanted to make my way around the whole floor doing what I always do, looking for certified Lincoln cents that I need for my collection, getting an eye in every case to see if there was anything worth looking at closer.

We made our way to one side of the room and started going up and down the aisles. I noticed that quite a few people were eating at, on, or behind their tables and it was not a pretty sight. Some tables even had people sitting on both sides with their food spread out all over the tables. Very uncomfortable trying to get a look in their cases! "Excuse me, could you slide your Ceaser salad to the left a little bit" hardly seemed appropriate, so we just passed by their tables. Too many other tables to look at and not enough time to dilly-dally with them.

We made our way through nearly the whole show in a few hours when I found myself in front of Dennis King's table. I sat down and took a look through quite a few of his Lincoln cents. He gave me a couple PCGS boxes of Lincolns to look through and unfortunately, nothing caught my eye. I did poiont out to him that he had a 1938-S in a PCGS 66RD holder for $50 that was the S/S/S variety. He was very appreciative of this information and Thanked me profusely for pointing it out. I joked with him that now he had better give me a great deal when I do find something to buy from him. I did end up buying a 1941-S PCGS 66RD that is an unattributed Large S with rpm# 3. I love finding varieties already in holdersimage So, I thanked Dennis and we were off once again.

At this point, we went out to grab a quick bite to eat and I called forum member coppercolor to see if he was ready to eat. He actually came out into the lobby ass my wife and I were sitting down and we had a nice talk in which he got to meet Mrs. 66RB and I got to meet his father who was there working on his Indian cent collection. I recently was able to buy the nicest 1957 Lincoln I have ever seen from coppercolor, a PCGS66RB and also a gorgeous 1956-D in 66RB, so it was nice to be able to Thank Jeff in person and also to share a quick bite with him.

The next stop was to finally meet Charmy Harker. I knew she would be at the show and I had been looking forward to meeting her. So, I approached her table and I couldn't help having a little smirk on my face, she slyly asked me what the smirk was for and I introduced myself and my wife, who quickly pointed out to Charmy that she could smack me if she wanted for presenting said smirk. While I was there Charmy was gracious enough to show us her two new Indian cent purchases, an 1879 NGC MS67BN Indian cent and an 1859 NGC MS64 Indian cent. Both were quite attractive and the 1879 especially looked like it had Charmy's name written all over it based on what we have seen of her personal collection on the boards here. While I was there I also met Todd (blue62vette) and asked him if he would mind shooting a coin I had brought with me. Since it was only one coin he didn't even charge me, nor would he accept any payment, very generous of him! Unfortunately, I didn't find anything to buy from Charmy, although while I was there Longacre and RYK arrived at the table. It was a very quick meet and greet with a couple of photos being snapped. I was actually allowed to take a few photos of RYK, Longacre, and Charmy together. I'm not sure if they came out at all as they seemed to be blurry when I shot them. I learned that RYK is a skier and not a snowboarder image so it will be impossible for us to hit the slopes together image I can not be seen with a skier, nor can he or should he be seen with a hoi polloi snowboarder.

We next went back to Angel Dee's table for a more thorough look. As I was looking through a few different Lincolns I came across another unattributed 1938-S PCGS66RD S/S/S Lincoln cent. I pointed it out to Andy who told me he must have missed that one and he proceeded to give me a superb deal on it. He did have another in his case that was was attributed but I didn't get a price on it. Next I found another 1941-S Large S in PCGS 66RD that he had labeled as a Large S so I bought that. I then saw a 1927-D PCGS 63BN Lincoln in his case. I put my loupe on the case to check out the coin. I saw that it was the D/D which is (I believe) a unique variety in Lincoln cents being that it is a tilted repunched mintmark. I'm pretty sure there are no other tilted repunched mintmarks in the entire Lincoln cent series. He had the coin marked for $80 and insisted on selling it to me for that price, despite my protestations. I also bought a stunning 1940 PCGS 67RD Lincoln that has a lovely texture to the surfaces and interesting, eye appealing toning. Andy told me he searched through over 100 rolls and pulled this and a few others for submission. The coin I bought is one tiny tick away from a 68RD, it really is the nicest 1940 I have ever seen in hand.

A special treat while I was sitting at Angel Dee's tbale....Andy let me look at his complete Buffalo Nickel collection. The set is valued in the low to mid 6 figure range and it was AMAZING! The very first coin I pulled out was a 1913 type I in NGC MS68* (!!!). Every single coin was a monster with many, many pop tops with the most amazing toning I've ever seen. That was something I won't soon forget seeing.

Next we went over to the PCGS table to drop off a few submissions. Here's what we did:

Sent in these three for variety attribution, all of them are already in PCGS holders so all I had to pay was $24 each plus $8 handling fee and return shipping.
PCGS 63BN 1927-D/D rpm #1--this will be a pop 2 with one higher in 64BN.
PCGS 66RD 1938-D/D rpm#1--this will be a pop 1 with the next one down being a 64RD.
PCGS 66RD 1938-S/S/S rpm#2--this will be a pop 27 with one higher in 67RD.

The following were dropped off for crossover and variety attribution:
PCI(green label)AU55 1909 VDB DDO#1----this should go 55 or even 58, however I specified a min of 53 just to be safe.
NGC 65RD 1968-D DDR--specified a min of 64RD
ANACS 1971 64RB DDO#1--specified a min of 63RB, here's to hoping it goes 64RBimage
ANACS 1980 AU58 DDO---specified a min of AU55, although this should crass at the same
NGC MS67 1943 Lincoln( no variety, just nicely toned) 2nd time through.......E.D. last time....what about the other ones already in holders with the same exact toning? fingers crossed on that one.

Too bad PCGS won't attribute the 1941-S Large S's, as I could have sent in the two that bought at the show.

Mrs. 66RB and I then decided to go check in to the Hyatt as that would be where we were staying the night. We were very hungry by the time we went up to our room and decided we would go down to Sullivan's restaurant as many people had recommended it. It was just right around the corner from our Hotel so it was very convenient. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The drinks were also very good.image After dinner we went back up to our room as we were both pretty tired.

Saturday we got up and went down ti the restaurant in the Hyatt to have breakfast. I recalled being gouged there a few years ago and this time was no exception, although the food was pretty good. We headed over to the convention center to take a last look through a few dealers tbales that I hadn't spent enough time at on Friday. One dealer showed me a bunch of Lincolns he had just purchased and I saw a coin that I had sold on eBay a few years ago, a 1915 65RB Lincoln cent. He let me look through the rest of his stock and I came up empty handed.

That was pretty much it for the show although I did stop at on more dealer's table. The whole show every time I looked at this dealer's table it was empty. So I approached it and saw it was Ossie's rare coin shop. I looked in her case while she was looking at a piece of paper right behind her case. I saw there was a nice looking 1915-D NGC MS65BN Lincoln as well as another Lincoln that was covered by a loose slab in the case. I stood for a minute or two waiting to be asked if she could help me, when I finally asked her if I could see the coin that was covered up? She very dismissively told me it was a 3 cent piece. I told her no, there was a Lincoln cent that was covered in her case. She proceeded to pick up the whole case and tilt it so the loose slab slid off of the covered Lincoln cent. It was quite comical to see this happen. I then asked her to see the two coins and she gave me the dirtiest, nastiest look one could imagine. I was shocked. Here she is, obvioulsy very slow, and she's going to give me attitude about asking to see a coin? While she was preparing to open the case I told her "Nevermind, you're obviously much too busy to be showing any coins", and I walked away. What a bad feeling this woman left me with as I exited the show. Absolutely no excuse for her to act the way she did, and I will never buy anything from her. I don't need to be treated that way, and I have no respect for people who act the way she did.

So, we left the show and walked over to the aquarium, the details of which I will not bore you with, if you've made it this far. Suffice to say, it was a mistake to go on a Saturday afternoon, as it was PACKED and you could barely see the displays. It was not a mistake to drive home on Saturday afternoon, as I am usually battling Friday evening rush hour leaving the Baltimore show.

All in all, I had a good time and I'm sure (although she won't admit it) Mrs. 66RB eagerly looks forward to the next coin showimage I got some cool new coins and varieties, met a few new people, and saw a little more of Baltimore than I had in my previous trips to the show there.

edited for accuracy of the 1940-P Lincoln cents' history.

edited again......the 1938-S/S/S is a pop 20, not 27 as previoulsy stated.image

Excellent report and it sounds like it was a very good show for you. I also always check Dennis King's coins and usually end up buying something. He is a pleasure to deal with. Glad you and Mrs. 66RB had a good time.

Nice report and nice meeting you.

I never thought I would read these words in a coin show report: "Excuse me, could you slide your Ceaser salad to the left a little bit." image

See you on the slopes! image

Nice detailed report Rob! And I very much enjoyed meeting you and Mrs. RB. She seemed very kind and lovely, and she must be very patient to be following you around coin shows - that's much more than my sweet hubby would do! I can say that, other than to pick me up one time, my hubby has never set foot in a coin show. Now my ex, on the other hand (with whom I have a very good relationship) lives part time in Baltimore and part time in Newport Beach and he came to both the Baltimore show (to buy an ancient coin for his religious folks) and the Long Beach show (to see the Ship of Gold).

In any event, it looks like you found some very nice copper - easy to do at Andy's table! And thank you for taking the time to stop by my table - I hope to see you and Mrs. RB again!

    That's a terrible report!!!!!!!!
Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Mrs.66RB saw that your taste in handsome copper is only surpassed by your taste in beautiful and intelligent women. Where was that in the report? huh

And most people were probably wondering what she was doing with SUCH a geeky guy. And where's that in the report? huh

And you left out the 1911 which despite high praise for the 57 that we both are fond of, left me wanting.

Give Ossie another chance. She is a strange cat, but man I enjoy talking to her every show and she dropped a great double mint set on me!
    Jeff
I'd like my copper well done please!

Jeff, please accept my sincerest apologies, how could I have left out your gorgeous 1911 66BN? I was going to start a thread in May, as centmaster has promised me to bring his 1911 66BN to the next Parsippany show. I will let you know how yours stacks upimage

And yes, I do wonder what Mrs.66RB ever saw in me......been together 15 years now in September...I must be doing something rightimageimage

I looked at Andy's Buffalo collection as well. Nearly every coin is a multi-colored toned jewel.
