my hunch is that they were bought straight from the Mint, stored in an attic and forgotten for 25-30 years. then they were probably sold to a dealer when the owner passed away but the damage was done. just a hunch with no inside information.

aside from PVC damage, i'd rank attic/basement storage as one of the causes of the highest attrition for Proof Sets/Mint Products.

fire damage is another possibility but i don't think it's a botched AT attempt.

This stuff doesn't surprise me. We have folks sitting at the top of the registries who buy crap like this all the time and they actually believe they're great collectors. image

You're seeing things. NCS wouldn't make a mistake like that.

If they are in NCS Environmental Damage holders then what's the problem, other than that they are revolting looking?
  • krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
    Wow, those are ugly.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Unbelievable... a couple of nicely toned nickels like those two, and all of a sudden, no one likes them. Amazing!!! The ultimate discoloration has been reached on these coins... how can you lovers of tarnish not be fighting over possession? image (Yeah, sarcasm is my favorite humor). Cheers, RickO

Those are so nasty, even I would not accept them for my collection. Not even for my run over by a truck collection! (which is somewhat of a misnomer- I have a collection of crappy coins that I enjoy)

what this originally made me think of(past the obvious, which is that the coins look hideous) is the number of coins lost by attrition through the years. it's been discussed here before, i think back around the time of Katrina and cladking had some good input estimates. at least in that instance there was a little warning and perhaps the oppurtunity to get things to safety. fires are different, though.

    sad, very sad.

I've also seen a 1983 no S dime as well on TT that looked just like these two. Maybe it's related...
