Is this original toning on this seated quarter?

link
I am curious how many think this would be original toning on this seated quarter?

Target toning on both sides? I don't know if this is what would naturally happen but the
center is just too white for me. I'd say no but could be swayed.

I wouldn't call that target toning, but regardless, it looks blatantly artificial to me.

I'll vote with the crowd.... as long as they say AT
  • Not original---the toning looks 'accelerated,' the edges are too dark for such white centers.

    not a chance that's natural.

    no
  • Doesn't look original to me. And IMO, to get a certified piece of the listed AU grade would be a lot easier without any concerns.

Too white in the centers, and the color changes seem too abrupt.

    No no no, never.
  • I sort of figured it would be an anonymous no. I have never seen one toned like this with such a white center thought it would be fun to post.

Another reason to be a poster here, I wouldn't have thought that looked AT until reading the other posts and looking at the piece again.

I've seen worse offenders in holders.

I don't know about how original it is or isn't, but I like the look of it. Which brings me to this question. Why does the toning or lack of toning affect the grade or weather it will even grade or not. Why don't they just grade to coin based on wear and leave it to the buyers as to weather they like the coin or not.

I have always thought and always will that color SHOULD NOT affect grade!!!!!!

That's not even close to looking natural. And it's ugly, too.

I understand the point you are driving at, but do you realize what would happen if the grading companies stopped judging a coin by it's color? (no racial undertones intended) The coin doctors would start painting murals of color on our coins. We would end up with coins that said "Vote for Bush" in the myrid colors that dance across a coins surface neatly encased in a PCGS holder. Does the world really need that?

Target toning can happen on both sides, especially when a coin is stored in a cardboard album holder.

Looks not very good. I question the toning on this piece, just does not look right to me...

Well, it is the original work of a coin doctor anyway...image Tarnish should NOT affect the grade of the coin. The coin should be graded on the merits of strike and wear. No place in any of the grading guides that I have seen, are there descriptive standards for tarnish. Cheers, RickO

Flagrant AT. This is not even the type of ugly colored toning that can develop when a cleaned coin is put in an album for a long time. It is the kind of toning that develops when a cleaned coin is put in a 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask with some chemicals for 5 minutes. You might get skin cancer just from touching it. image

No. A question you may want to ask yourself is why isn't the coin holdered, and you may have answered the question yourself.

edited to add, I have seen coins with secondary toning with light centers holdered, but the re-toning happened over time and was not accelerated. The blue splotches over the brown indicates to me at least from the pics that this coin was doctored, and a poor job as well.

I'm often second guessing myself on AT vs NT, but my immediate reaction to that image was , cleaned then AT'd.
