Sometimes, much ballyhooed coin collections (edited) ARE all they are hyped up to be...

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
Recently, there has been much talk and publicity surrounding a collection of toned Morgan Dollars which was acquired by a well known dealer from an allegedly (edited: image )
extremely discerning collector. The coins were supposedly gorgeous, beautifully toned, yada, yada, yada. Well, I finally saw about 20 of them at Baltimore, and frankly, they looked fairly ordinary to me. (Edited: image )

Below, are images of two of them which I had for sale, but which are no longer available.

Is it just me, or are they more or less, run of the mill toners, the likes of which you see all over the place and in large quantities?

While they are nice, they are not GSAGUY quality.image Thus no multiples of grade price
    for the toning.

I don't really know what to make of this thread...but as I read it, I keep thinking that we're all just a little like cattle being led to slaughter.
  • Well guys we all know coinguy1 hardly ever sees any coins, not to mention good ones, so he can be forgiven for his naivety.

(thankfully I noticed the winky near the bottom of his post and remembered that coinguy1 wouldn't have had the coins for sale in the first place if they weren't very to extremely nice or otherwise I might have made a fool of myself by attempting humor image )
  • MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,584 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, but he edited his post a minute after posting it...maybe to add the winky and throw us a curve ball.

Sometimes, much ballyhoo is needed, to justify and hopefully support the prices that will be asked when they are offered on the market.
Now the Jack Lee Walker set - those coins spoke volumes for themselves.

I don't recall the exact number of toners Laura bought from me but know that it was well over 100. If all you guys got to see at Baltimore was 20, unfortunately, that was probably scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Glad you moved the coins so quickly Mark.

My apologies (and embarrassment) for my apparent failed attempt at humor and the resulting confusion.

I had thought that posting the images (of what I think are sensational looking coins) and winkie would make it obvious that the thread, including the following comment/question was in jest:

<<Is it just me, or are they more or less, run of the mill toners, the likes of which you see all over the place and in large quantities?>>

To be serious and clear, however, each and every coin that I saw from the collection - and I understand that I didn't even see the best ones- was breathtaking in its color and eye-appeal. It is simply an amazing and unforgettable group of coins.

Brings back some fond memories, met GSAguy, Mark and Lake at Fun 2003?. Brian's coins were spectacular and he was nice enough to show them off to me, Mark was as congenial as one could be at a show and lake is a great guy and had the fortune to have supper with him one night. Good group of guys all around.

Eh, I still for whatever reason do not like wild toned coins. To me it looks like an oil slick. I can see the appeal they may have for some people, but I personally prefer circ-cam look with circulated coins, and untoned for MS coins.

Now, Hyperion, pay attention. This is your average, run-of-the-mill, Collector's Universe smiley face: image......
This, OTOH, is a Collector's Universe winky face: image......

  • Another dealer, who is known to post here, bought 7 or 8 of the toned dollars from Legend. No offense CoinGuy1, but they killed the ones you shared in this post. (although they are certainly very nice). I didn't even bother to ask about price because I know they are waaaaay out of my league. And, FYI, some credit should be given to Andy Kimmel of Paragon, who sold a number of the toned dollars to GSAguy years ago.

No offense taken. And if it is the group I'm thinking of, they are amazing.
  • I wanted at least one example for my collection and contacted Legend only to be told they didn't have any coins from his collection for sale at the $1000 or less price point I was looking for image
