I don't think I have seen one in the green slabs with the original font that wouldn't cross or upgrade. We found some VERY nice ones at the Grapevine, TX show
Of course, the Koolaid drinkers will try and tell you THIS is a better coin...

I've always collected coins, not plastic and certainly not "labels" (inserts)!
As such, I've methodically found many cherries in older PCI holders - and others as well. Blind hogs DO find acorns every now & then!
It's not so easy anymore. Nowadays, what I see in some "plastic" is utterly ridiculous! I mean - REALLY ridiculous - as in trying to take advantage of newcomers that just do not know any better!
We've all seen them!
To be a good Cherrypicker takes time and a really good eye!
PCGS may NOT be "perfect" but there IS a reason why they are #1.
PCI graded coins have been all over map. In the early days there were some properly graded and even some under graded coins in PCI holders. The trouble is YOU had to know how to grade coins so that you could pick out the right pieces. In later years, when the company was playing musical owners, the coins were almost uniformally over graded. The brand name became known as one of the worst offenders in the "third world slab market."
I think I know what you mean when you say you can't "give them away." You can't get good prices for coins in PCI holders. They are like raw coins. Only coins that have been slabbed by PCGS or NGC are in the position to get the best prices. Even the experienced graders have to discount their buying prices for the cost of slabbing and add a risk factor for those times when a coin does not get the grade you think it deserves.
For all of these reasons it is best to buy the coin in the holder you want from the get-go. Don'd depend upon cross-overs to get to where you want to be.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Agreed. If the holder is more important to someone than the coin, just buy the dang holder.

Thanks BOOM for this generous offer. Some years I had the opportunity to cherry pick over 700 PCI coins and likely ended up with about 300 of the highest graded/quality ones. Some MS/PR 70's were obviously not but others looked " perfect to me and think I have a good eye and I was not trying to kid myself. These fill safety deposit boxes in a local bank now, what would be the best way to get them evaluated? Thanks for the kind offer and words.

I bought quite a few of the old PCI morgans in the mid to late 90s if my time line is correct. I always liked them ok, especially when they had a percentage listing for toned or white. I think it is funny now that some of my coins that say 100% white have turned some interesting almost rust like color around the rims since then.
IMO the old first generation PCI green tag holders as well as Hallmark were 2 of the best grading services ever, and I would eagerly buy coins of my liking in either one of those holders at the stated grade in a heartbeat.

Rather than trying to memorize what a font looks like, just remember that the "most accurately" graded PCI coins are in the old green label holders with the 10 digit serial number...not the 9 or 14 digit, but the 10 digit.

As long as YOU agree with the grade and show them to freinds for a 2nd opinion buying a PCI coinis fine. If you really want to sell it crack it out and send it to one of the big 2 TPG companies.
I have bought two PCI coins - Shield Nickel and 1877 IHC. I cannot remeber grade of Shield but when sold it, it did well - I flet that it was undergraded when I bought it. I still have the 77 - was in a 35 holder but a solid 30. I cracked it out like most all my coins. I am pretty sure that they were green holders.
Is there a grading company that will charge only for the crossovers and upgrades. I really believe that a lot of ASE beauties I looked at are MS/PR 70 and the rest are high grade 67+coins. The slightest flaw would rule ASE's out of the 70 class. One thing that I did not realize PCI is that they have a 3 tier cameo process. Cameos would equal weak cameo at a big house, Deep Cameo would equal a cameo coin at the major housed and Ultra Cameo would equal a DC at PCGS and Ultra Cameo at NGC, Would an auction house do that for me at no charge. Any help is appreciated, thank You.

70s won't cross at either "big 2" reputable companies as a matter of design (ie....a 70 carries a nice premium and potential hit on their guarantees, so they need to see the ENTIRE coin raw in order to make their judgement). You would have to crack them out and hope they grade "new" as a 70.
If you have PCI SAEs that are toning, feel free to give me a PM and I can try to help you as well (I know toned SAEs a little bit )

I doubt you would have that problem here. A lot of people don't care about the holder.

Are the coins improperly graded? Why aren't they selling?
Why not just describe them at what you think the proper grade is, price them accordingly, and watch them sell.
Unless they are expensive coins don't get into the very costly crackout/crossover game.
