What is the LEAST collected series out there?

Billet7Billet7 Posts: 4,923 ✭✭✭
In your opinion what is the least popular series to collect? (This does not include the series that is so rare that very few people CAN collect it, I mean the series no one likes.)
I really have no idea, I don't like IKES so I would bet on that.

I bet there's less Proof $20 Gold collectors than 3c nickel collectors image
...maybe we can make a claim for any US Proof Gold coins Pre-1933
  • Ok here is what I see from the bottom of the collector barrel.

    1. SBA dollars
    2. Pres Dollars
    3. JFK's (post 1971 - 2000)
    4. Washington Quarters (1989-1997)
    5. Westward Nickels
    6. Some Modern Commeratives (think 80's olympics)
    7. Various Proof sets (1970's - 1990's)
    8. Mint sets
    9. Rosie Dimes (non-silver)

2 cents pieces. I like three cent pieces and half dimes, have no use for 2 cent pieces.

What was the originial question? image

<< <i>In your opinion what is the least popular series to collect? >>

I think you will find that there are more collectors that collect modern coinage then the so called "classic" coinage. Just a guessiment but probably less then 15% of all US collectors actively collect series from the 19 century. I would wager that there are more collectors of modern Washington quarters, Rossie dimes and Lincoln cents then all of the "classic" series collectors put togather. image

Clad dimes may be the least collected but clad quarters aren't far behind.

In the last year the dimes have moved up hugely and prices are up sharply. They just might have overtaken the quarters.

oh, bet that last one riled some here huh.."

You bet it riled some of us. Well, maybe a few of us. Okay, maybe just me, but I love the Seated half dimes. They combine a beautiful design, common to all of the Seated denominations, with a reasonable and affordable series, not common to any other Seated series.

Let's not pick on the little half dimes. Save your comments for the Ike dollars, Shriever commems, or SBA dollars. Now those are ugly.

Henry Linderman’s $72 gold piece would have been – if they had ever been struck. Although the 7-cent piece that folks in Cleveland wanted (to match the local train fare) would be a close contender.

As a produced -- either 3-cent design or maybe the 20-cent series.
  • I am only watching dollars and half dollars. In those two denomintations the Susan B Anthoney dollar's are far and away the least collected.

I nominate $50 burnished platinum 1/2 ounce coins.
Probably less collected than any of the series above.
    They're still relatively affordable.
    They're still relatively unknown.
They're relatively rare - at most 2,577 complete sets can ever exist (possibly fewer depending on 2008 mintages).

IMHO the 2 cent piece should be more widely collected, it's a short and relatively affordable classic coin series.......... and I like them! image

Am astonished the buffs and IHCs appear so low on the list. Then again, #12 on this list is still a LOT higher than the other series mentioned here.

    series huh?

easy, long gold series like lib quarter eagles and half eagles.

i can pretty much guess that all the others mentioned cannot hold
a candle to the lack of gold series collectors where the amount of
coins is greater then 175+ for the series.

I can't believe that there are more folks collecting Peace Dollars than Lincoln Cents. The humble Wheat Cent has been the foundation series of practically every coin collection begun for the past 60 years!

As for the bottom - gotta be the SBA.
