PCGS MS69 Morgans

I recall a couple of years ago or so, someone had like 4 or 5 PCGS MS68 and 69 Morgans listed in the same auction for $1 million (imagine the final value fee now). Does anyone know anything about those coins or have pics of them?

IIRC that was a Michael Casper auction. He has an archive of coins he's sold at http://caspercoin.com/soldcoins.php if that's of any help. I can't get the search feature to work, but scrolling through a few pages there were some MS68s there.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I've seen 2 or 3 PCGS MS69 Morgans over the years. None of them impressed me.
    When in doubt, don't.

I've seen two 80-S MS69s in-hand and they were both spectacular!

I have seen a few MS69 Morgans. While they're spectacular to look at most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an MS68 and an MS69. That's also considering that MS68's tend to sell for a small fraction of the price that MS69's can realize in an auction.

i got to see my first MS69 Morgan, an NGC MS69 (I think it was 1880-S?) at the Phoenix ANA show. It was mind blowing and as nearly perfect as you'd expect (with the price tag to match) for an MS69. I can't imagine that there are many like it.

There is a PCGS MS69 81-s comming up and it's CACed too.
So, its just a shade away from MS70. image

There is a NGC MS68 "star" 81-cc , that has quite a few visable flaws, and imho, is not what I'd expect. Does anyone know if it is a recent crossover from say PCGS 67 ?

In general, it amazes me how crappy morgans can be relative to other coins and still get the same MS grade. Is that what you guys see?

That's because the Morgans are large coins. The contact marks are relative to size.

I agree with this statement and you have to consider the weight as well which makes it easy for them to get marked up......could you imagine a bag of ASE's.....they'd look like hamburger pretty quick image

I agree completely! It seems like the graders expect a few bag marks on Morgans and pretend they aren't there.
