How many forumites have collected both 1947-1964 Mint Sets and 1950-1964 Proof Sets?

Why do you collect both? Which of the two do you like best? What type of coins (white or toned MS; untoned brilliant proofs, untoned cameo proofs or toned proofs) do you collect in the Mint Sets and Proof Sets and why?

And, do you ever think these Mint and Proof sets will ever be considered more than just "modern cr*p" or "widgets" [even though some of these sets or individual coins are very hard to find]? If so, what [other than huge attrition] would cause a change in how these sets are viewed?

I would like to after I get some other collecting goals out of the way.....

36-42 proof sets would be of interest as well.....

  • I Have every Proof set from 1950 to present time in Original mint Packaging. I Used to have (not all,but just about all) Mint sets but accepted an offer on them all. I Also sold my 1942 6 Piece Proof set back in 1990 because the offer was just too good to pass up. My Personal preference is the Proof sets, but the Quality control at the Mint has gone down hill big time. Ray in Florida..

Well, I;ve collected proof sets since 1975 on a regular basis and the rest I bought.

Same is true with most of the mint sets.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I do have my 67 SMS which is my birth year.

As far as why? I have preferred proofs as a bit more effort goes into making them. Thats about it.

Of note, I did start Mint sets in 2007 and just got the 08 along with the Silver proofs. With the design changes in 09 and the limited runs on SACs in 08, this could be cool to have

Dang, every collection I buy seems to come with those pesky proof and mint sets. I dump them as fast
as I can. Can not come to accept the idea that those are meant for circulation and thus don't think of
them as coins. Just not my gig.

Well, at one point, all coins would not have been your gig. Just a thought.

Really? Are not most coins business strikes and until the latter half of the last century Proofs were
rare and Mint sets did not exist.

  • I have every mint set from 1933 (except 33 gold and 34s $) thru 1958 in capital plastic and the rest in mint packaging to present
all proof sets from 1950 thru 1954 in capital plastic and rest to present in mint packs. I have many duplicate sets in mostly original white with a few with light toning.
I like to collect every modern coin in bu of all years and proofs.image

Actually, if you had the bucks you could get one from the Mint itself, so bag it, this is getting old and your argument is flawed.

Thats also where most early proofs came from as well and like it or not, thata swell.

Tell you what, just send me all of those nasty 1999 Silver Proof sets my way and I will pay for the shipping and handling.

Personally, I think stuff from the early 20th century is beautifual and is artistic and it just squeezes my lemon to meet elitists who 60 years ago would have been laughed at for their modern coins as well.

I have an almost complete run of mint sets in OGP 1947 - 2008; still missing the 1948, 1951, 1952 snd 1953

    and I have an almost complete run of proof set OGP 1952 - 2008 including Prestige, Premier and Silver proof sets; missing the 1968-S no S, 1970-S no S 10c, 1971-S no S 5c, 1975-S no S, 1983-S no S 10c. 1990-S No S and the 1990-S No S Prestige set

Wouldn't mind having the 1936 thru 1951 proof sets too, but they are hard to find in OGP.
