It would be interesting to hear predictions about what will happen in the Lincoln market after 2009 passes.

Anyone care to make a prediction?

Well, hopefully the cent will be done away with which would cause a mad scramble to complete sets before prices went nuclear.

If not, then I suppose the 09 coins will simply be folded into the existing set and it'll be business as usual. Similar to the way the Westward Journey Nickels were handled.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is the current plan is to produce the four different 2009 reverse designs depicting different stages of Lincoln's life. Then, in 2010, same Lincoln obverse, but as yet undetermined new reverse. If that is correct, I would assume the Memorial series would end and a new set would begin with the new 2010 reverse. Anybody agree or disagree, please chime in.

  • Numismatic News agrees with dcgolfer/dan. The reverse would be emblematic of Lincoln preserving the union, to paraphrase.

I'll bet with copper prices going down the great populace will not be subjected to "Uh it costs HOW much to make a penny" propaganda.

The new Lincolns will ignite a wave of interest in the penny, those shiny new babies will be there in your hand...just about given to you at the local supermarket.

It will be a lot of fun, a neat coin for the common folks to enjoy as well as collectors.

It will be fun to see how the Mint makes sets of these sell for huge money. No bullion value, low denomination....we shall see.

I hope they handle it well. And please by God US MINT youve got to find an alternative to whatever rinse you use on the coins that causes these black spots. Just do it. This 2009 commerative series of coins should not NOT be subjected to this horrible spotting. I will wager any decent chemist within ten minutes of seeing what the mint is doing and what they are using, they could devise an alternative that would leave the coins all spot free.

Why not? I preach this to you other collectors and you guys Pooh Pooh it like its some fancy notion, well I just don't get it. YOU guys should all be outraged about those spots...and what they have done to years of collectable coins...And YOOH HOOOH PCGS ***Do you realize how much your submissions would increase during the next year if you used your considerable influence with the US Mint and pressured them into addressing this spotting situation changing to an alternative non spotting rinse.

    Whew.

I think the expectation and anticipation has caused Lincolns to scream as of late ( last year or two), many of the early buyers/hoarders sit pretty, while folks getting in now will not see the returns expected. They are at an all time high, will they continue the climb? Time will tell. I'm a collector first, a dealer/flipper second.

I think it will be a good time to hang onto your unc memorial rolls.

They will tank if my luck holds true.
