You just nipped me at the end on the Head Tail $20 from Mark. And on my birthday too! That is a really cool piece. Glad to know it went to good hands.

    It didn't go much above melt. Of course if Fred hadn't out bid me I would have wondered if I had bid too high. Always tough to figure what something like this will go for. I am thinking Fred is keeping it for himself or going to "flip it" for a quick profit.image

    I terms of stuff like this or anything else I always ask myself how much would it cost to make. no matter how you crack it you could not get a new one for 935. so I would say it is a fair price

    Other than its intrinsic bullion value, I just don't understand why someone would want a piece that had the design removed?
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    According to the New Yorker archive (from 1940), Udo Reinach was a golf-playing stockbroker. That would seem to fit with the personality of someone who would carry such a piece
    Always interested in nice love tokens and engraved coins.

    Great pickup Fred, I think the Jury used that in the recent OJ Trial. Heads he's guilty Tails he's free. Well we all know what that coin landed on.

    Thanks for all the nice comments.

    I happened to run across the listing just this morning,
    and made a note to bid on it.

    The note was on my computer, but I got distracted by a phone
    call -- when I remembered about the note, I thought for sure
    the auction had ended! I clicked on it, and there was exactly
    30 Seconds left. Glad I got it - my bid was over $1,250 for it.

    Not sure what I'll do with it, but it will be fun to take to dinner
    every now and then........

    This is watercolor on paper by Sam Francis (untitled 1958)
    It must have hung in Udo M Reinbach's home at one time. It was a gift from his estate to the Museum of Modern Art.

    I found this looking up the name "reinbach". Searching for clues on why the piece might be of interest.

    Fred, when you get it, please reweigh it and check the diameter and reeding against a U.S. $20. I suspect that either the listed weight is incorrect, or it is not a U.S. $20.

    I find it very hard to believe that both obverse and reverse designs could be removed and only lower the weight by about 1.65 grams. I bought in a super-slick peace dollar the other day, and it only weighed about 20.2 grams.

    I made a note, and will weigh and check the reeded edge.

    Mark Goldberg is pretty good (one of the original Goldberg
    family who owned Superior here in LA), but I wondered about
    the reeding myself.

    In any case, with the name on the piece, and a bit of Udo's
    history, it makes an interesting conversaton piece.

    I think I'll bring it to some coin dealer Dinners, and use it
    to see who gets to pick up the check.
