The reflection is distracting and adds nothing, in my opinion.

I think the brown border clashes with the gold, i say just keep it black

I agree, the reflection does nothing.

I also don't like the extra frame of red-brown, it doesn't fit well with the coin type or the regular B/W coin background.
  • I think the brown border makes your eyes see a slightly darker color on the coin. I haven't broken into the gold arena so don't know if that's a help or not for you. If so, stick with it, if not I'd go with a black like has been suggested above or try a deep red/maroon. Play with a few different backgrounds or borders and see how the colors change just a bit. Good luck

    what is the presentation for,
to show to other coin geeks,
to show to lay people (if that's a correct terminology for a normal person)
to sell on internet or catalogue,
    for a slide presentation??

I find the original reflection too much,
and kind of like the partial reflection,
but mostly like the plain black background, in general, perhaps with the grade in small print.

    You one naughty boy RG!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Rob, get your head in the game! That is way too distracting (what coins?)!

I applaud the effort, but to me the reflection adds nothing. If this is for an eBay sale, or any other sale for that matter, the written description is redundant as more than likely a description will be written about the coin any way. One can look at the coin and see that it is a 1914-D Saint without the writing on the image. For your own personal portfolio or coin album, it's great.

Mesquite, I like how you have a reflection with the right perspective. It looks flat. The other reflections look vertical (and wrong).

I've been trying to get flat reflections in my images - how did you do it?

Another member suggested to me that I apply a gradient mask to my reflections to allow them to fade out quickly (thus a sort of compromise with the folks that find reflections distracting). I found the gradient did, in fact, make the main image appear to "pop".

Please share with us how to get the reflections to appear flat.

Here is an image that shows the fading of the reflections using a gradient mask attached to the reflection layer.

For me, I think using all of these templates is trying to influence the mind's eye into seeing the coin however the 'artist' wants us to see the coin. Leave it in a raw form, with a portion of the slab so there is something to compare against.

This type of presentation would also seem to lend itself to image manipulation.

Thank you all for your comments and thoughts on presentation. Rob, you're a wild man. My perception is that (with the exception of not showing the slab) you think a straight black background with minimal writing is best. My intent here really is just to photodocument what I have in the most pleasing way. As you know, we sometimes liquidate and I'd like to keep the coin in an archive of sorts if that day comes. I wanted to get your input on the matter. Here it is,
