are gold coins hard to get?

Just wondering. I have been sort of out of the loop lately but a guy that I work with told me that he can not find any gold coins. He said that he called several coin shops and nobody has them because of the economy. Is this what others are seeing?
I know that the price of gold itself isn't doing anything crazy so I'm thinking that he is off base.

Thanks,,
Joe

    No, but the economy is.

It's very difficult to find any gold coins close to melt value right now.
  • I'm dumping all my gold coins on heritage right now. I can't believe how much they're bringing and there is still 12 or so days left in the auction.

Here's one example. 1904 double eagle

APMEX has 1/10 oz gold raw.

  • I went to several bullion coin online stores this morning to check prices. Not a one of them is selling any right now. TeleTradeDirect.com, BullionDirect.com, etc. All say to check back later. Something is afoot.

  • this is incredible. the demand on ebay must be incredible as well... perhaps driving prices artificially high?
  • Right now, there seems to be a shortage of any bullion (gold, silver, and platinum). This is inpart due to the economy and fears about it. There's a lot of people out there that want to buy right now. There's not very many people (at least ones with quantity) that want to sell their gold right now. Maybe this is because they're also the same people that want to buy more or perhaps because they bought it at a higher price. This has created a big different in "paper spot" and "physical spot." If you can find someone that physically has Gold, you have to pay more over spot than normal to get it.

Our local paper today had a big story on the lack of available gold/silver coins. A local dealer said that he could not fill a $50K order for bullion coins even after contacting all the outlets he has used for years.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Hi Joe, welcome back in the loop.
It's getting it (Gold coin) for a low price that's next to impossible, nowadays. The world's caught on to our little hobby. I personally feel that fear and panic drive masses to want to step up to the plate, but most strike out by blindly swinging the bat.

If one does his due diligence, ponying up for a good gold coin is very rewarding. (just look at oldcameoproofguy's post again and again)

    Happy hunting,

<< <i>I wouldn't say they are hard to come by on ebay. There is always a $50 or so premium on Eagles since I started buying them in 2000. Buy it now prices are at least $200 above melt these days and they are selling also. But yes, at the moment it's at a much higher premium than just 90 days ago when it was selling near melt. Makes sense considering the wild fluctuations.

"........are gold coins hard to get?"

I've been searching my pocket changes for 40 years now and have yet to find one of these!

On the serious side, no, I don;t think gold coins are hard to find if you look at all the different venues that are available both online and offline.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
