My 1000th post - Contest. Name some films! Good luck. WINNER ANNOUNCED

Well, it's taken me over 6 months to get to my 1000th post here. It's been fun and I hope it continues to be for a long time. Thanks fellas.

So, on to the contest. First, I'm broke right now and trying to get married, a deadly combination. So I called Steve at BBCE and asked him if I could offer up a $30 purchase there to the winner of the contest. He was fine with it. So, when the winner is chosen, I'll call Steve and give him the name (just PM me your full name if you win) and you'll be set up to rip a nice old pack or two, or you can put it toward a larger purchase. He doesn't care. Sorry I can't up the ante but times are tough. Good luck to all.

This contest will be open until 8PM EST Sunday July 6. Here goes:

I work in the movie business because when I was 18 the AFI released the top 100 movies of all time list and I looked at my VHS rack and realized that I owned 98 of them already (I was missing Frankenstein (1931) and The Searchers). So needless to say I've seen a ton of movies, but we'll keep this contest to American films only. It's kind of open to interpretation but here's what I want to know:

Name your top 5 movies of all time (I'm looking for quality, not favorites like Airplane, Caddyshack etc.)

Name your (1) top sports movie of all time (anything goes)

Name your favorite actor of all time

Name your favorite actress of all time

Recommend one movie to me that you think I may not have seen

So there it is. Whoever has what I deem to be the best post, combining films I've seen and that fall in line with my tastes and a good recommendation wins. It's kind of arbitrary on my part but I don't think that I'm partial to anyone in particular winning so it should be fair enough. Plus, this could be fun to see what kind of flicks everyone is into.

Edited to change the end time of the contest. A week was just too long.

    Good Day,
A contest right up my alley, I love films:

    Top Five All Time:
    1. Alien (Best version of Agatha Christies 10 Little Indians since the 1940's) The use of Technology with dirty gritty realistic depiction of Space life had never been accomplished like this on film before!
    2. Time After Time (Great spin on the H. G. Wells story with great acting and a mushy Love story thrown in)
    3. War of the Worlds (1956 George Pal Version) Nuff Said!!!
    4. Inside Moves, Way underrated Richard Donner Film (Great Sports Movie, at least partially, nobody has ever heard of with the greatist Heart ever)
    5. Creator (Peter O'Toole at his best with an awesome supporting cast of newbies, Virginia Madsen, Vincent Spano, Mariel Hemingway)

    Best Sports Movie of all
Days of Thunder with Inside Moves close second

    Favorite Actor of all time
Real toughy should be Top Ten but since I had to choose one, Ever since actually crying in the Theatre at the end of Driving Miss Daisy, Morgan Freeman. Ripped off for the Oscar that year.

    Favorite Actress
Not as tough but still several in the Top Ten with a squeaker in Annette O'Toole

    One Recommend
Creator, One of those movies that I've seen dozens of times and still want to see again !!!

    Thanks for the Contest!!!!!!!

Name your top 5 movies of all time (I'm looking for quality, not favorites like Airplane, Caddyshack etc.)

    1. Star Wars -- Love it or Hate it, today's "Blockbuster" movies all owe homage to this film from Story to Special Effects to marketing.
    2. Citizen Kane -- Great Movie, filiming techniques way ahead of it's time. Great twist ending.
    3. The French Connection -- Taught movie goers that all films did not have to have a nice tidy ending.
    4. Alien -- In my opinion the first truly "scary" movie. Makes everything before look cheesy.
    5. Lord of The Rungs: The Fellowship of the Rings -- Reintroduced the "Epic" film to a new generation of film goers.

Name your (1) top sports movie of all time (anything goes)

The Natural -- This film always gives me goosebumps.

Name your favorite actor of all time

Jack Nicholson -- Always gives a top notch performance, even in his old age.

Name your favorite actress of all time

Jodie Foster -- I usually enjoy her movies. An actress who can act, and not just look pretty.

Recommend one movie to me that you think I may not have seen

Run Lola Run -- Very Cool Movie which keeps the heart pounding and underscores the power of love.

Texoma, looking me up on IMDB and pandering bad credits that I have won't help image. I didn't even really do anything on those flicks anyway. I was doing international film licensing for that company but they gave everyone credits. I do marketing now (which is what I wanted to do anyway) so it's unlikely that I'll be adding to those pathetic credits any time soon, but my 9 year plan is to start my own company and do distribution and marketing for films that I produce. That said, when I saw my name roll past on The Upside of Anger (the only one of those movies to play in theaters), I gotta say it was pretty fun - and that movie wasn't bad.

Note: I think I'm actually going to end this contest Sunday night instead of next Thursday - a whole week is just too long.

The golf stuff has been a collection I've been accumulating since I worked at the 2001 US Senior Open at Salem Country Club. I was in college and working for a security detail that was escorting players through the course. It was there that I met Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. I had been a big time golf fan for awhile but I didn't know just how nice those guys were. I got Arnie and Gary to sign balls for me and Jack signed my program (he doesn't sign many balls). Since that tournament I've been going to 6 tournaments/year. I buy the balls and flags unsigned on eBay and take them with me. Some of the older guys I've had to mail to but that's pretty much it. This year I went to Buick Invitational, Bob Hope Classic, Los Angeles Open at Riviera, US Open at Torrey Pines, AT&T Senior event at Valencia and the Toshiba Classic in Orange County. Other tourneys that I've been to are: Bank of America Senior event outside of Boston, Greater Hartford Open, the tournament that used to be at Westchester CC in NYC, the US Open at Winged Foot, the AT&T Pebble Beach NPA and the First Tee Challenge at Pebble. I've become what I believe to be one of the stalwarts of the hobby and an expert on most living player's signatures. One of these days I'll ask Joe O if he needs work done for golf stuff image. Could be a cool side job!

<< <i>Who are you Mr Vito????

From what I can tell you are leading a very fun and interesting life. >>

It beats selling insurance in Des Moines - apologies to anyone who does that. Quite honestly I don't make a lot of money but it's enough that I can have a few hobbies and enjoy what I do for a living. I've got a lovely lady that I'm marrying next Summer and a small but comfortable apartment in Burbank. If you know anyone who works in Hollywood, understand that the real money doesn't start rolling in through the executive chain until you become a VP or higher. The hierarchy goes like this:

Assistant (did that for 2 years)
Coordinator (did that for 2 years)
Manager (have been doing this for a year and a half or so)
    Director
    VP
    SVP
    EVP
    COO/CEO/CMO etc.

I'm just a manager now. Hopeful to be getting bumped to Director sometime in the near future. We'll see.

Name your top 5 movies of all time (I'm looking for quality, not favorites like Airplane, Caddyshack etc.)
Goodfellas. Classic. #1 quoted movie of all time, great music
    Godfather part II
    Star wars
Princes Bride. Fencing, fighting, giants, romance
    Crash. I cried
#6 Alt. Raiders of the lost Ark I. I hate snakes!

Name your (1) top sports movie of all time (anything goes)
Tin Cup. I hate movies where the hero comes from behind and wins. Costner implodes in the end of this movie and loses. Kind of like Rocky, but a little funnier

Name your favorite actor of all time
    Marlon Brando.

Name your favorite actress of all time
    Katherine Hepburn

Recommend one movie to me that you think I may not have seen

  • Name your top 5 movies of all time (I'm looking for quality, not favorites like Airplane, Caddyshack etc.)

    1) Life As A House (for any kid ever who can remember their father playing with them in the ocean, this movie is special)

    2) With Honors (class act of a movie, about the importance of helping people and not jusy helping yourself)

    3) It's A Wonderful Life (classic Christmas flick)

    4) Men of Honor (great acting by Cuba Gooding and of course Mr. DeNiro)

    5) Meet the Parents (awkward humor moments in films are the best)

Name your (1) top sports movie of all time (anything goes)

Wow...just one? I'd have to go with Field of Dreams. Getting to play baseball in your backyard on a real field with lights with past superstars of the game would be, well, any sports fan's dream. Beyond that, to see the philanthropy from Moonlight Graham, a man giving up what he thought was his dream to heal children. What a great movie all around.

Name your favorite actor of all time: Has to be Denzel Washington. Every role I've ever seen him in he's been powerful. He seems to never act in movies that are "below" him. He's always in great films, and is always the star of the show.

Name your favorite actress of all time: Rachael McAdams (from The Notebook, Red Eye, Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers, etc.) Not necessarily because she's the best actress, but she's played many versatile roles and shows she can cover any part. And the fact that she's drop-dead gorgeous certainly doesn't hurt at all.

Recommend one movie to me that you think I may not have seen

I would recommend "Life As A House" if you haven't seen it. It has Kevin Kline and Hayden Christensen in it. It truly magnifies the need for a strong father/son relationship from both sides. I dare any person on these boards to watch it and not cry at all. GREAT movie.
Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.

    In no particular order:

    1. Glory
    2. The Maltese Falcon
    3. The Sting
    4. Master and Commander
    5. The French Connection

Invincible (as Yogi Berra might say: if it wasn't a true story, you wouldn't believe it was true)
Robert Duvall (most underrated actor of our time)
    Audrey Hepburn
    Modern Times (1936)
  • 1. The Godfather
    2. The Godfather II
    3. Scarface
    4. Goodfellas
    5. Saturday Night Fever (I know, weird)

    #1 Sport Movie: Brians Song

Favorite Actor: Al Pacino w/Deniro and Willis a close 2nd and 3rd

Favorite Actress: Drew Barrymore. Another weird one but I seem to like every movie she does

Recommend one movie: "Lust in the Dust". My gut hurt for days after I first seen this move due to laughing so much.

Well, after much deliberation, I've come to determine a winner. My favorite of those that didn't win were these -

Nam - Hey, don't get me wrong, I LOVE Angels With Dirty Faces, it's a better Cagney performance than White Heat and Pat O'Brien is fantastic in it, but I just can't put it as the #1 movie ever. Great taste in flicks though Nick.

Elemenopeo - just an all around solid post.

Blackborder - You're right on about Robert DuVall being the most underrated actor of his time. He was amazing in like 10 different movies starting with the small role in To Kill A Mockingbird, right up through MASH, the Godfather flicks, Tender Mercies, The Great Santini and The Apostle. Nice mention there

Aragorn the Bold - You may have won, but your recommendation just didn't get by. You needed to come up with something you really thought someone who is huge movie guy and works in the industry (and gets academy screening occasionally) hasn't seen.

So, before I present the winner, note that I picked him because of the all around excellence. He may only have one movie in my top 5, but he has 3 in my top 20 and I had not only never seen his sports film (I've been trying to find and buy it all day), but I have never seen his recommendation either. That means he has to win in my eyes.

For reference, here are my answers:
Top 5 films of All Time

1 - The Third Man (1949) - really combines every genre of excellent filmmaking. It's a drama with comedy, suspense, the greatest setting ever for a film (burnt out Vienna right after WWII) and two of the best actors ever (Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton). If you have not seen it, watch it, then watch it again to see every great thing you missed the first time.

2 - City Lights (1931) - Simply the greatest romantic comedy there will ever be. It's Chaplin at his apex, and this movie came out in 1931 - AFTER the introduction of sound into film. None of these BS films like a Sleepless in Seattle or any other modern RomCom will ever come close. The closest I've seen come to City Lights are #5 on this list and 1995's Before Sunrise - another phenomenal film

3 - The Godfather Part II (1974) - Just a phenominal epic. Superior to the first one because it's so grounded in reality. Yes the first one was based on fact but the second one is just more intricate. The Corleone family has real problems that don't involve other families. The scenes infront of Congress are captivating. "Don't worry about anything Frankie Five Angels." Nothing more needs to be added.

4 - The Manchurian Candidate (1958) - So good it was banned in it's time. Laurence Harvey and Sinatra with a vile Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Islin. She played Harvey's mother but was only 2 years older then him if memory serves.

5 - It Happened One Night (1934) - Gable and Colbert. Wow. Along with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Silence of the Lambs, it's one of the 3 films to win Oscars for Best Picture, Actor, Actress and Director in the same year. Just a great film in every way.

Sports Film - Well, now I'm dying to see the winner's choice, but my dad passed away when I was 14 so Field of Dreams always does it for me as an American man who loves baseball.

Actor - Tie between Orson Welles and Robert DuVall. I even love Welles cameo in The Muppet Movie when he asks his secretary to "prepare the STANDARD rich and famous contract for Kermit the Frog and company"

Actress - No one ever better than Kate Hepburn. Meryl Streep can kiss her ***.

So without further adieu, the winner is LostDart58. Please PM me your full name and I'll call Steve at BBCE in the morning. You'll have a $30 credit there to spend as you wish. Congratulations and you have great taste in films, sir. I even loved your choice of Gary Oldman - another of my favorites! Nice job everyone.

    Best,
    Mike

WOW! I am indeed honored. Classic movies have always been a passion for me as much as vintage cards.

I did not want to make my selections as mainstream and predictable as others. I went with the boxing flick "The Prizefighter and the Lady" as my sports film not because it is the greatest sports movie of all time but because it actually starred a real boxer in the lead role as well as other boxers of the era. Real life boxing champion Max Baer, (father of Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies) is surprizingly good as is Jack Dempsey is a lesser role. The leading lady is Myrna Loy, who has always been my favorite "old time" actress.

Gary Oldman's career isn't what I thought it would be as he has been more of a character actor then a mainstream star. He acting range allows him to play a wide variety of roles convincingly from Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy", to a repressed homosexual in '50s England (Pr*ck up your Ears) to a southern prisoner in Chattahoochie. He recently plays Serious Black in the Harry Potter movies.

I had wanted to see the movie Dodsworth for a long time having read about it in one of my many movie guides. They finally started showing it on Turner Classic Movies. I was very impressed after seeing it.

Thanks for the contest. I will save the $30 credit with BBCE and pick out something at the National in Chicago at the end of the month.
