Will someone please explain the 71-s 103 & 106 and the 72-s FS-101 varieties.

Thank You

Wow! Thats a tough question and let me be the FIRST to say, the two 71-S proofs are not MINOR in any way shape or form. They have some of the biggest, consistent doubling I've seen on an IKE. No doubt there are quite a few "minor" doublings out there but these two are not even close to that class.

The CPG is a very informative guide but it doesn't really do these coins the justice they deserve.

As for the 1972-S, since 0 have been graded by PCGS, I have no idea but the coin could possibly present just as much dramatic doubling as the other two! The same is true for the 1973-S.

Here are some clicks of the FS-103.

Comparing the FS-103 with a lessor known DDO of the same year:

I do not have my FS-106 available or I'd shoot that one for you. These are major DDO's and if they were NOT IKE's they would certainly command a 4 figure premium instead of what they are currently going for.

Here are the shots I took of the FS-106.

Not quite as dramatic as the FS-103 but nice doubling non the less.

On a different note, the coin below is not listed in the CPG but it has very dramatic Doubling on the Reverse:

Picked it up at a local coin shop for about $7.00!

Thank you for the excellent pics and the informative comments. However, I'm a little "thick" sometimes and still don't quite get the difference between the 103 & 106. Is the difference the amount/severity of doubling or does it have something to do with the PEG R?

    Thanks Again

That DDR is a nice one! Is it on the '71-S?

Can someone explain, to someone who knows very little, the difference between the 103, 106, and the DDO below?

That is easy...there exist over 50 different doubled obverse dies for 1971 proofs, most of them being very minor, very difficult to see, and very, very difficult to attribute.

If the doubling is not FS 103 or 106, then PCGS will just denote it as Minor Variety DDO without trying to attribute it to a specific die.

Wow! The 103 shots by Lee are great!

Too bad the CPer's Guide pix are just pitiful in comparison. A shift that major and that scarce should be valued higher IMO.

If good pix like Lee's were used in the CPG, I think demand would be significant.

THANK YOU Lee for sharing these , and all your other great IKE pix!
