Raw Card Sunday: Scans from this weekend's show pickups......

I had to dig more than I've had to in awhile to find decent stuff this weekend. But I did come home with some nice cards. Here's Round 1, including some football. I'll post two more rounds in between pieces of pizza.

    Nice pick up!

The 61 DeMerit and 54 Martin cards look trimmed....

I hope not, but does anybody else see that?

Great cards for the most part, but some of the Bowman edges look kind of rough.....

    Maybe it's just your pics???

    Sweet pickups as usual Ron.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Good for you.

    Thanks Steve.

I agree the '61 Demerit looks unusual, but I think the '54 Martin is fine. The card I am most suspicious of, however, is the '61 Starr. I got it for a good price but thinks it may be trimmed off the top edge.

We'll find out soon, because most of these are going to PSA tomorrow.

PS. Yes, many of the '54 Bowmans have rough cuts and I love 'em that way!

Yes, the right border on the DeMerit (across from his cheek) is bulging outward a little.

In a related story, PoppaJ has fit in here seamlessly in a very short time, and I find his posts to be informative and enjoyable.

Is it just me, or do well centered 63's look exponentially better than slightly o/c 63's? More so than other sets - at least IMHO. Nice cards.

Wow, great pick-ups. Can you give any advice on picking up raw cards at a show? Do you bring a magnifying glass with you?

I have noticed Poppa J and like his comments....welcome to the boards.

Aric, definitely take a magnifier with you. You have to be willing to dig through piles of stuff to find a few gems. That's just how it is these days.

  • I haven't found that many cards over the last 3 years looking through box after box of cards! Sometimes I'm amazed when I find something/anything pre-1980 that looks like it could grade a 7. I usually bring a magnifying glass, but rarely have reason to use it image
Maybe I need to start going to shows outside of NJ. Nice finds, good luck with your grades!

    Hey Ron,
Great cards as usual. Some real beauties you have posted.
I've handled/owned a lot of '61 Starr's, I think you're correct, the top or bottom edge looks a little uneven. It might be cut or miscut. Does it measure short?

Also with the right edge bulge on your '61 Demerit I would wager that PSA will not grade it and call it a miscut. I've had at least a few dozen vintage cards with the exact same look over the years. PSA has always called them miscuts.

What's strange is even if the card is miscut, it's not trimmed, but for some reason PSA doesn't want to put these cards into holders with the mylar baggy for some reason. I've been meaning to ask Joe O about this issue but I always forget to. This year at the National I will get his take on the reason for the non-slabbed miscuts and let you guys know.

Good luck with your grades on these Ron.

Very nice '57 Yogi. Would you mind disclosing what the avg. % of Beckett was you paid for the '63 and '61 commons. Nice '54 Bowmans as well!

Ron I don't collect football but I know prime stuff when I see it. The Maynard was a sweet way to introduce your post. I swear that Blanda musta been born lookin' old! Great cards, thanks.

I thought the 64 Robby was a bit wavy, very nice pickups!
  • Ron, always cool to see what you are able to come up with, you must be a patient man.

Any guess as to how many cards you sifted thru to find this lot?

  • RonBurgundyRonBurgundy Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭
    Here are the grades. Carnage.

    Maynard - 8
    Blanda - Evidence of Trimming
    Lebaron - Evidence of Trimming
    Starr - Evidence of Trimming
    Frank Robinson (64) - 8
    Schoendienst - 7
    Mathews - 6
    Raffensberger - 7
    Trucks - 6
    Martin - 7
    Scheib - 5
    Joost - 6
    63 McLish - 8.5
    63 Estrada - 8
    61 Francona - 8
    61 Jones - 8

Looks like someone was re-recording "Superstition" and "I Just Called To Say I Love You" in between grading these. The last four, the F. Robby, and the Schoendienst are right, everything else was butchered (including, apparently, the rest of the '61 Topps football).
