I find a lot of details are drowned out on the reverse by what might be overcontrasting.

First, love the coin and the macro lens! Great amount of detail. I agree with laurentyvan on the contrast. The devices are too dark and the fields too light; usually devices are lighter than field. How lustrous is the coin and what lighting are you using?

If you're using the angled glass, I wouldn't with the macro lens, and see if that improves it.

CP, I'm using 2 60W reveals through the angled glass. The coin is pretty dark. Check this out - I tried a single 60W bulb and adjusted white balance more accurately.

Still dark, reduce saturation by 10 or 20 and see what happens.

You have the coin in hand. How does it compare? How is the color? The color in the shots seem very saturated. Is it that way on the coin?

Try a shot with overhead lighting, without the angled glass...

Ok, looks like angled glass doesn't work as well for this set-up. Here's overhead shooting at a slight angle to the coin. This is what it looks like unless you're trying to reflect massive amounts of light off the surface...

There we go! Very nice color! I've found that the angled glass is NOT a universal solution. I use it for proofs and other extremely reflective coins, but outside of those, the results are better using overhead lighting, in my opinion...

Yep - I prefer the last shot. It shows less colour but I like the lighter look and the detail is much more visible.

I really like this coin, which is not surprising, since it came from Brett

I like the overhead shot, but it doesn't do the toning justice. I'll be playing around with this in the next few days until I can find a happy medium.

Thanks, Brett! Your coin is a fantastic subject to study

I was a little discouraged by not being able to shoot through angled glass last night, which makes me believe that I had something wrong with my set-up.

I tried again tonight, with a coin everyone is probably tired of seeing, but I promise to get more toners soon

I love how distinct the die corrosion is, as well as planchet porosity.

This lens makes me want to crack my Thalers out of their slabs and shoot them all over again

I'm thinking about locating some local eBay sellers dealing in coins and give them an option to have me shoot their nicer offerings. Will give me something to do on the weekends
