WHATS THE SAFEST WAY TO SUBMIT COINS TO PCGS?

Hello everybody. I am a new member and i am making my first submission ever to PCGS. What is the safest way to submit coins to PCGS? Do i have to tell the shipper on the declaration form say UPS or Fedex or USPS that i have gold coins in the box that i am shipping, especially if i get an insurance for the coins for $2000+ ? You see one time i was shipping another item at the local Post Office and when i asked for a $100 insurance the postal clerk asked me what i have inside the box. While i hear the other clerks ask the other customers wether they have something breakable , something flamable etc. I don't know why he wanted to know what i have inside the Priority Mail box. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  • Registered and Insured is the only way to go. If they ask what's in the box, just tell them that it's either 'none of their business' or 'numismatic material.' Chances are they have no idea what numismatic means.

  • I agree. FedEx and UPS will not insure coins. You would have to purchase a 3rd party insurance policy. Registered Mail is the best way to go. You need to tape all the seams of the priority mail box with gummed kraft paper tape (water acivated) . I have never been asked what I am mailing only the safe question they ask everybody about fragile, liquid or potentially hazerdous.

Registered and insured mail through the USPS. I do not know if FEDEX offers insurance on coinage and if they don't you will not be covered by them from loss. If a clerk asks what is in your package you can simply tell them "merchandise".

Welcome aboard CB2597.....from the PCGS FAQ.........

***Q: How should I ship my coins to PCGS?
A: We ask that you send your coins in 2 ½ x 2 ½ Mylar flips. Please DO NOT send your coins in stapled holders, 2x2 flips, vinyl flips (that may contain PVC) or tubes, as doing so will cause a delay in processing. Place a white sticker on the flip and write the submission and line number that corresponds to that coin. We recommend keeping your coins together in the same order as they are written on your submission form by rubber banding them together. Package your coins with bubble wrap or Styrofoam to cushion your prized coins en route to PCGS. Be sure to seal your package securely to reduce the risk of tampering during shipping and prevent coins slipping through openings in the box (paper tape is required on Registered Mail packages). We recommend that you mail your package via Registered Mail through the USPS. Please mail packages to:

    PCGS
    PO Box 9458
    Newport Beach, CA 92658

As an alternative to USPS, you may ship by Federal Express using express services only (Overnight, 2-Day) to 700 E. Alton Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92705, HOLD FOR PICK-UP. This address will NOT accept FedEx Ground packages. No UPS shipments are accepted. p> Note: On all packages please indicate the fastest service level you are sending on the outside of your package, preferably below the address, in all capital letters. (i.e. EXPRESS; CLUB; REGULAR; etc.)***

Defintely the way to go. Registered and insured. Thats funny they ask you whats in the box. They ask me everytime I go in the post office which is once a week. To this day I have never anwsered their question. I just look at them and say nonthing. Maybe its just standard they ask.image
  • Thank you for all of your advice. I will take note of that and i will tell the clerk the next time that what i have in the box is nothing Breakable, nothing Flamable and nothing Dangerous. Also thanks for posting the PCGS guidelines in coins submission. I surely forgot that instruction on indicating the line item which corresponds to which coin inside which flip. Hire an armored car. Incase your coins into a 2000 lb block of cement and place that into a safe, then put that into the armored car. Use titanium welds to anchor the safe to the armored car. Hire four tanks, 200 marines, 2 Apache helicopters and a F16 to escort the armored car to PCGS at Newport Beach.

....but for most of us, we use registered mail with insurance.

If there is a major coin show that PCGS goes to, the safest way would be to hand them to PCGS there. But if you live in an area that doesn't have a large coin show, registered insured is the way to go like most people have stated.

It is nice to think that the safest way to get coins to PCGS is to hand them to PCGS at a show, but didn't tmot do that at one time and PCGS lost the package because they didn't ship it to their headquarters via Registered mail? Here is one thread about the experience and this is a second. I would hate to lose my coins and would really hate to lose them in this manner.

If you really hated to lose your coins, your declared value was much too low. image

  • Like everyone else says, Registered insured. And as for the question at the post office "Nothing flammable, breakable, or against post office regulations." And that is all you need to say about it.

I once sent in one coin in a cardboard 2x2 stuffed into a standard letter envelope and a stamp. Worked like a champ. image
  • Registered and insured. Prepare to wait forever, but it's worth it.
