Is this an Adams error?

I have just found a John Adams coin that looks kind of strange to me (I'm at work so I dont have my camera with me). The coin is fine on the one side, but on the John Adams side the dates are missing and so is half of the word "Adams", but not the left side or right side of "Admas" but the middle of the word as if the coin was ground down by part of the minting process after being stamped. It also appears that some of his mug is very faint (strike through) but this seems like a different issue. Someone must have noticed that there is a faint groove or scratching just between the rim and the writing that surrounds John Adams, well it appears that whatever causes this groove has taken away the date the middle portion of Adams.

Anyone have any ideas as to whether this is classed as an error?
Oh, and it's a "D" mint coin.

Perhaps a strike-through error? Could you post a photo here?
  • I'll definately post a photo when I get home tonight - I'd love to hear everyone's opinion. I also found a nice clipped Adams Dollar and you can see from the photo that I'll post that it would be very hard to fake.

  • That looks like a Kugerrand to me ....ROFLMFAO
  • Ive seen the "parallel to the rim lines" on the end coins of rolls. Don't know if that's what you are refering to. Thought they were errors till I realised it was on the end of about every third roll. QC being what it should be, I believe every coin on the end of the roll should have these lines as a matter of consistancy(sp)

Sounds like it's damage caused by the roll crimping machine. That's why it's on the end coins. image

  • OK here are the pictures of two different coins - sorry it took so long (Note to self: buy a macro lens).

These are of the missing date (removed after minting)...

These are of another error I found - a clipped Adams dollar:

The first one looks like damage from the roll crimping machine so it's nothing. image

The other one looks like a nice clip. Yes it's worth something. image

    Neat find on the clip!

  • Thanks all so far for the feedback...

Regarding the crimping maching on the first one - it's strange though because I found it in the middle of a roll, unless it was rolled and then re-rolled (quite possible since I got it from the bank) I can't see how this could have happened. How does the edge lettering maching work? Where does it grab to rotate the coin (if it does)?

  • I found some Adams dollars with a circular ring around them as well. They were in the middle of the rolls I searched so it's not from crimping on the end coins. Your first coin appears to be a struck through grease error from the die being struck with grease filled dies, causing the coin to lose detail when struck. NGC has a site with more information here. Nice finds! image

  • Would NGC or PCGS grade it as a "clipped edge" or something similar? Would it affect the grade?

They probably would grade it as a clip but you need to submit it as a mint error.

The clip won't change the grade.

Both will certify it as a clipped planchet mint error. More info on this error here. For PCGS you should send it under their 'Mint Error' service ($40/coin), for NGC you can submit it under any grading tier but if you are only sending one coin, you need to send it under the 'Early Bird' tier ($30/coin) and select 'Mint Error' as the service.
