For those interested-Minnesota"D""Extra Tree"?

Found these after going back through the mint sets.Didn't find anything on the "P"mint
and thought I would look at the "D".Now we have a Minnesota "left" and "right"and
since these are trees that should be as good or better then the Wisconsin "high" and "low".

Savic and Keez-- Figure once the word gets out,Ken Potter will have enough of them
to look at and write about.
Thanks for the compliments on the photos. They were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950 I bought
off Ebay about a month ago.Paid a bit more then $100,but it came with extra lens,USB card reader,
all the manuals,couple disks of software,quickstart card(2)compact flash cards(8mb and 256mb) and
carrying case.
Russ was right these are good cameras for the price and not too large a learning curve, but they do eat up the batteries.
Rampage--Did think about sending it to Coin World, but haven't decided on that one yet.Probably not.

Keez--I uploaded pics to some other threads and to keep from taking up space I deleted the
ones in this thread.Still have them saved to hard disk if you need them for anything.

Cool find! I wonder if PCGS will disignate them as "extra tree" or something. Are you planning on sending it in to Coin World?

    Interesting!
  • Great find and nice photos. You might consider sending the coin to Ken Potter. He's been writing the lead articles on the matter (in Numismatic News) and he helped attribute the first three varieties. Coin World has simply been publishing follow-up articles/columns. --Savic

You definitely should contact Ken Potter about it. I emailed him yesterday about mine (possibly a 4th variety, P-Mint).

I checked my 2005 mint sets and I don't see an extra tree of any type on any of them. I did note that there was an AXE or two hidden among the trees so maybe they got chopped down; I don't know!! imageimage

I don't know if Ken has any D mint (tree on left) like yours. I emailed him and asked him to look at my scans. Based on his reply, I sent the package.

P.S. Where did your images go? Just red x shows

Buster, glad to see you put your pics back on the thread again. Ken Potter's site is updated with the most recent varieties found. Also check out the links to his article in Numismatic News about PCGS certifying the extra tree quarters.

Well I'll be! And to think Henrietta Fore said that with the new presses, errors would be a thing of the past.

    Ok, it's "PUN" time.
This whole TREE (MN) thing is not LEAVE(leaf)ING (WI) any kind of PAPER $ TRAIL, is it ? (PCGS)
    I didn't think so,

    bad pun image

I personally believe that die variance on coins that have so much intricate detail in them is making the clad coin business a "BUSY AS A BEAVER" business, indeed, as it applies to SHQs. No pun intended there.
Crazy prices for new finds, coupled with ebay is making the search much more fun.
Now, as a side note... the speared bison is turning out to be a die crack error that is tough to find. The wisconsins are in the thousands and I've found dozens and sold dozens of BALD bisons. (die fatique) on nickels.
The varieties that may come out of a clump of trees could be one of the most overhyped of all.... however, with the many varieties appearing already, it is possible that only ONE will be of any real significance.

The main difference as far as what I've read and learned to this point is that the Minnesota extra tree is a doubled die.
