Bust Half Collection - All coins placed on the first post

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,723 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have been laboring over a Whitman Bust type album for some time now.
I finally began to image some of the coins. I used a scanner as I can't seem
to get digital pics worth a dang. Anyway, this will be an evolving thread as I
add more and more images over time.

Here's the entire album as of 3/2006

I can tell already I don't like the scanned look as many of them actually do have some lustre on them, it just doesn't show in these images.

Very impressive. I think I like the '08 over 7 the most. How far along are you in the set?

    ps. where's the 1815? image

I am missing 7 coins from the Whitman album, and yes the 1815/2 is one of them.

    As are:
    1811 large 8
    1817/3 (don't even ask about the /4)
    1820 small date
    1822/21
    1836 00/50
    1836 RE

I have a 1807 small stars but it won't fit in the album, so I forgot to image it.

As for nicest looking, the 09, 10 and 12 look the nicest of this bunch, highest numeric greade. I'm sorta partial to the 14/13 myself.

You have a nice collection of CBHs started. Be sure to show us the rest of the set coins.

I know I am going against many CU member's thinking when I say I would submit the entire collection to NGC or ANACS under variety designation. This way the coins will be safe from harm, and will all have matching holders with consecutive ID numbers. JMHO
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

It's interesting, the scanner really doesn't do that great of a job on these things.

The 1825 really doesn't look as groaty as the scan does. It has some of the light and dark on it, but doesn't really seem to have

all the crap in the shield like the scan does.

I wish I was better with a camara.

This will be the last update for a week or two as I just ordered 2 new half dollars for the
last page, and I'll await their delivery before I scan page 4.
The nicest coin in the album (in my opinion) is the 1834 large date. The cheek on Miss Liberty
is nice and round like an apple, the entire coin looks like a high relief coin design.

    WOW

This is going to be one of those threads that needs a bump every 6 months or so for people to learn from it.

That old Whitman album of yours has some outdated printing on it:

Your 1823/22 is now called the "patched 3".

Your 1824/0/1 is now called either "1824/2/0" or "1824/various".

Your 1829/1 is now called "1829/7".

Your 1832 large letter reverse is not a large letter reverse.

You have put together a fine set of Busties. Those early dates would be a lot more difficult to locate in the current market. Now all you need is the new Overton book and you will have lots more to do with your collection. The book is now being shipped from a few dealers stock. I am still waiting for my reserved copy.

Mozin, thanks for the information, yes, that is a very old Whitman album. I think there was dinosaur crap next to it when I bought it.image

The 1823/22 being patched OKBustChaser mentioned this some time back, I figure if that's the way the album has it, I'm okay with it.

The 1824/0/1 I had also seen the /various, but hadn't seen the /2/0, but looking at it, I'd believe just about any numbers are there, definitely not the best day they had at the mint.

The 1832 bugs me, I doublechecked in my other busties thinking maybe I had put the wrong one in, but nope, apparently I just either got lazy and didn't double check a dealers attribution or missed it myself (can't tell). But I guess I'm on the hunt for a large letters 32 now!

Thanks for the comments on the set, it's been fun so far. I'm thinking about taking it out of the Whitman and putting the coins into something a bit more protective (without being a 3rd party slab). I still like to be able to see the edges when I want to, so I hate the idea of entombing them.

due to incredible shame, I went out and bought a large letter 1832 today at a coin show in San Jose. I also picked up a nicer 1827/6 too.

I'll update the pictures when I add my page 4 scans.

Both are more natural than their predecessors, therefore look better in the book.
