Can the source/cause of NT for one coin be unacceptable for another?

Say I removed a nicely toned commemorative from its tab card and put a Barber half in its place and left it tone over time. Assume for this hypothetical that the sulfur and other chemicals in the cardboard holder were still “active.” If the Barber tab toned would it be NT? Would it be market acceptable? Would your answer be different if instead of a Barber I inserted a replacement commem that was white?

I'm not a tone coin collector so I just wouldn't try it to see possible toning.
Dipping, or 'stripping' as I refer to it, actually alters the surface of the coin be removing a thin layer. Isn't that the definition of doctoring.........purposely altering the surface condition?
My take is this. If a coin is stored in a holder/album that is made for the display or ease of coin collecting then it is naturally toned.
Agreed.

So does a tab holder made for a specific commem qualify for holding a Barber?

So if a opinion is given here it just will not be from a bunch of guys on the internet that do not know chit.
Yea Right....as long the opinion matches yours all will be cool....

Yes. It's when you start 'adding' to the process that it becomes unacceptable. Just my humble opinion, which with $1.70 will buy you a cup of java.
Pull your coins out of holders and containers that just might impart some tone on them. You, by leaving them in the containers/holders/albums are doing a grave injustice to numismatics. It makes no difference that the stated ways of storing coins has been done for decades.
Only now is it pointed out by the esteemed Cal Gold that you just may be a Doctor. What a Doof he is !!

A Barber with tab toning would be a joke.

YES.
Tab toning only belongs on Classic Commems, and only on those that were actually distributed in such holders.
Whether it is a joke or not is irrelevent. It may look out of place, but it would still be natural.
