Some 1871 to 1873-s half dimes

Below are some half dimes from my personal collection from the 1871 to 1873 era. The first is a very nice 1871 that I believe is a proof with shallow mirrors. If not, it is a beautiful prooflike Unc. The toning is completely original and nice. The number of attractive toners that were included in the set I bought last winter was hard to believe. It is too bad that I was not able to do better capturing the colors with my friend's camera. The 1871-s coin is an ebay purchase that was used to replace a severely disfigured example that was included with the original set. I grade it AU55, and I think it was a deal at $101.00 including shipping. The 1871-s is scarce, but when it does appear, it can be found in mint state without much trouble. The first 1872-P is a PCGS PR64 CAM that has a nearly monotone navy blue reverse. The obverse is also attractively toned. I can't get a picture of this coin that shows the color or the cameo. The next coin is an 1872 business strike that is uncertified. The blue color on this one was relatively easy to photograph. I bought that one in 1997 for a measly $100. The first 1872-s is a PCGS MS-65 with speckled rainbow toning around the edge. I bought it raw and "made" it, like most of the PCGS coins in my half dime collection. The second 1872-s is an AU-50 with lots of clash marks, and a mintmark above the wreath. The 1873-P is a raw coin that I grade AU-53. the second 1873-P is an interesting coin that appears to have an errant digit "1" coming out of the top of the "8" in the date. However, it is not an errant digit, just a clash mark from the reverse, upon closer inspection. The 1873-s is a perfect match to the 1872-s, with beautiful blue, green, and russet speckled toning. One could argue that it is an MS-66.

I hope everyone who reads these threads enjoyed seeing my half dime collection, and I'm glad to see that a number of forum members have developed an interest in collecting the series. My 1000th post on the forum is coming up, and I intend to make it a "thumbnailed" picture of the entire half dime collection. I think I will be a scrooge and not make the thread into a "give away."

Great looking coins. Keep them coming, I really like to see them. And who wouldn't appreciate such a nice design. Seated coins rule.

Note: a bit of Photoshop magic may have been invoked in order to "acquire" this particular date, especially considering the striking resemblance between its reverse and that of the 1872-s in the photo above it. image
