New Collector Question

I am a fairly new coin collector. I have been buying pretty much everthing from the us mint that has come out in the past year. My question is it a better option to have coins graded then not. I have some of the silver eagles and commemertive coins that i think would be good to have graded. Also. with my coin sets, ie proofs, silver proofs, and uncirculated sets. is it better to leave them alone or to break them up and get them graded as well. thanks for any advice you can give

In my opinion I would not grade those items. They look great in the original packaging.

When I decide if I will send a coin in for grading I base my decision on the finances involved. It costs money for grading and for shipping both ways. So I would only do that if grading raises the value of the item OR if just because I really, really wanted to. Personally when I want certified coins I buy them that way in the first place.

    Welcome to the boards, a31sierra.

I don't think it's worth having those coins graded. If you want to sell them down the road, and feel they will bring you more if they are graded, you could always have them graded at that time. There's no real reason to do it now.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Greetings and welcome to the boards, A31sierra
.... there might be one or two in the bunch that could see a future in a slab, but go with Carl's advice. Learn a lot more first. We novices see a shiny coin and think it is PERFECT..... it takes lots of time to actually find such and unless it is a rarity (error of magnitude) or a limited production ( usually called "key date"), it is often times better left with it's certificate of authenticity as "original"

    Welcome aboard.

There is a loss when most of the recent sets are dismantled since the sum of the
parts is less than the whole. If you have very high grade coins oin the set then
this loss can be easily made up. If you send them in and they don't grade highly
then this would be a further loss.

As has been said; it's probably better to wait until you want to sell the coins and
then you'll also know more about which are worth having graded.

Of course if you don't mind the expense then there's no reason to wait. Encapsu-
lation does have its advantages in protecting the coins and can make sale easier.

There are only a couple of reasons to have them graded.

1.) You don't like the current packaging and you are like me who just likes to have all of my coins in one type of holder that all go in the same type of storage boxes.

2.) You want to compete in the PCGS or NGC registry. For this one, especially on new items it is sometimes less expensive to buy the item allready in the holder but it is usually pretty close. If you are not a member for submitting coins then there is an additional yearly fee for this.

Otherwise I agree with everyone else, keep them as is. There is little chance that most of the modern stuff will be worth enough more than you paid to justify the grading fees if your intention is to sell someday. You never know though so keep your eyes open, sometimes an item from the mint gets hot and with that demand and prices go up.

    Oh yeah, welcome.
