Looking to start a collection on this..
Hey there, Ive been thinking quite a bit on what to start my first collection on.
I was thinking of going for coins based on or during the civil war such as tokens, commemoratives, and coins minted during the war or related to it. I've been looking at ones like the 1922 Ulysses Grant half dollar, and commemoratives of leaders and battles. Im not looking for perfect coins, just ones that would look nice in a collection, and not as an investment.
Since I've never collected really before, would this be a wise choice? Should I stick with graded only? I know some people here have coins like what Im looking for, so hopefully they can provide some help. And are there any books related to this?
Thanks for any help.

However if you would want this collection to be slightly nicer, you could try high circulated graded pieces, or even BU pieces with pretty eye appeal.
Just depends on what you want to do and what your budget will allow.
Id personally try for a pro-graded mid grade set. Almost like a type set of civil war pieces in VF-AU Range.

If you really get into it, you can join The Civil War Token Society CWTS . They sell the books too.
most too expensive for me, but many of them are
surprisingly affordable.
Another option is to collect only one Commem, say the Oregons. None of the dates/mints are expensive, and the design is considered by many of us as the best in the series.
You could start by collecting the eleven Classics having ships in their design. The Columbians in 1892 and 1893, Bay Bridge, Delaware, Hudson, Huguenot, Long Island, Norfolk, 1920 and 1921 Pilgrim, and Roanoke. The Hudson is a bit pricey, but all the others are reasonable. You could further limit this to only nine, by collecting only one date for Columbian and Pilgrim.
Do you like eagles? Then collect the eleven: Alabama, Alabama 2X2, Arkansas, Bridgeport, Connecticut, Iowa, Lincoln, Panama-Pacific, Robinson, Stone Mountain, and Texas. Again you could limit it to ten by collecting only one Alabama. This set will cost more than the ship set.
How about animals? Collect the twelve: Lafayette (horse), Bay Bridge (bear), California (bear), Maine (moose), New Rochelle (calf), Oregon (oxen), San Diego (bear), Old Spanish Trail (Steer), Stone Mountain (horse), Vermont (wildcat?), Wisconsin (badger), and York (horse). You could eliminate the pricey Lafayette because it is not a Half Dollar.
Like guns? Collect the eight: Boone, Elgin, Lexington, Missouri (pricey), Missouri 2X4 (pricey), Oregon Trail, Vancouver, and York. I might have missed one here. Shovels and other tools sometimes could turn out to be guns.
Only buy PCGS or NGC, forget about the other grading services. ANACS and ICG often have very nice coins but not always, AND the resale on these is not good when compared with PCGS/NGC.
