My First "Good" Collecting Pic

Hi, Everyone.

I got my new camera today, so I figured I'd play around and take a few pictures.

This one is of a Morgan dollar I got on Ebay. Let me know what you think. I still need to get a copy stand or a suitable tripod, so it might be a little out of focus, but it's leaps and bounds better than anything I've taken so far.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

You're ahead of about half of the coin pics on Ebay. image

Yah, it is a little blurry, and the lighting could use some help. Do you have a tripod to minimize shaking? I set my pics up with a tripod, then use the self-timer feature so that I'm nowhere near the camera when the pic snaps.

  • Hi, Craton.

Too big as in the file size, or do you mean the dimensions of the picture itself?

Hopefully I can get the blurriness to go away with a tripod. And I'll definitely need to get lighting, but for now I've got a lamp I can take pictures by, so I guess I'll try that.

Nice pic. Your skill will improve as you go along. Now, you need to learn how to post the pics (and make 'em smaller).

Edited to remove large file. Image resize and listed below.

  • Hi, fcloud.

What did you use to get the file down to a managable size for the forum? I've tried to upload to the forum, but I keep going over the size limit, even when I tried to use Photoshop's "Save for the Web" setting....

I bring my photos into Microsoft Paint. Click "Image" Click Stretch/Skew" and enter the same percentage into both. I reduced this image to 20%. Then just save it to a new file and upload.

  • Okay. Here's another one I took, then. image (I seriously need better lighting.)

Your second one was better. It looks like you are doing better with the size on the Dollar. Now try to make the FE Cent smaller.

  • And here's half the size of that (which I guess is 30% of the original):

Nice morgan. A copy stand will help. Try not to shoot the coin from too much of an angle and you'll get better focus.

  • Here's a pic I took of a quarter eagle (1/10 oz) coin I bought recently. (Only the obverse in the pic.) I set it for incandescent white balance, so I think I got rid of most of the orange sickly glow that had haunted the first couple of shots I took with this coin.

An inexpensive tripod or copystand and some full spectrum lightbulbs will help with the photography.

The ironic thing is that some sellers do much better with mediocre photos that hide the flaws on their mediocre coins.
  • Well you did a better job at those pics than me...I tried takin some pics and they only amplified the scratches and dings by 5 times due to the lighting...

    Nice job on the gold.

  • Thanks for the compliments on the gold. I got the white balance problem worked out for that particular lamp, so that's probably my best picture to date (although I would have liked to have zoomed in a little more on the coin).

One question I have for the photographers out there: What kind of batteries would you recommend for the camera? I've gone through two sets of AA Duracells since yesteday. (I think it's because of all the adjustments I'm doing with the shots.) I'm thinking of getting either the CRV3 or NiMH rechargeables.

I don't use batteries at all, my camera is plugged in AC, mounted on a copy stand

That would be a great setup, but my camera doesn't have an AC hookup, unfortunately. The other thing is that even though I've got another camera, this one looks like it would also be better for everyday use (family gatherings, etc.), so I would definitely want it to have juice.

  • I vote NIMHs. They can often be found on sale at Amazon or other Internet venues with the charger. Get two full sets if you plan to do a lot of photography. One set and a fast charger may be sufficient if you don't take that many pictures.

Here is a deal for under $15 with 4 AAs and the charger.
