The difference between a MS66 and MS67...

...Is there a real tangible difference between these two grades (from PCGS or NGC) or is it often simply the "luck" of the submission?image
What are your thoughts on this and why?

As far as Early Commems. go (this is the area I know the most about) I would say the difference is in the originality of the surface in many cases--------------BigE

In Morgan dollars there is a difference. In the simplest terms, I think a 66 can only have trivial marks in trivial places, and a 67 just has the look of being even cleaner. PCGS has graded 10 Morgans in 69, and side by side I'd bet a third of those would drop down to 68. PCGS has graded a whopping 369 Morgans in ms68. Given how tough it is to make a Morgan 67, 369 seems like a lot of 68s (the 79-s, 80-s and 81-s account for nearly all of the 68s).

There is a diference when it comes to Lincolns, the O in one on the rev must be fully struck for PCGS to even consider it for 67. There is a difference between a PCGS 67 and an NGC 67 also, many NGC 67 Lincolns will drop to 66 at PCGS as NGC is a bit more lax on strike.

Perhaps its just what I've seen but I find that PCGS values a full stike with blazing luster and will forgive a couple of hits. Where NGC will forgive a weak strike and favors blazing luster and super clean surfaces.

Outstanding luster (should be) a must for a 67 coin. Oftentimes it is not however. I think that contact marks in obvious areas can prevent a 67 grade, but marks are often times given too much weight.

Absolutely a difference WHICH I didn't see going in, .... AND, thought were all 67/68's going in.... it kind of lends credence to what HRH says: ''ownership adds a point !"
