How often were 1840 lib seated dollars forged?

going to see one this weekend and want to avoid problems. Were these coins readily counterfeited?

I've never seen or heard of a contemporary counterfeit. Like TDN said, plenty from China recently, though.

  • I thought I saw one recently where the stars were poorly formed, not sharp points, symmetrical, etc. Is that the key? I am going to see someone this weekend who is selling one so I would hate to be disappointed.

Hey, Andy, are those Chinese fakes cast counterfeits? If so, weight and ring would be wrong. That would be the easy tip-off, I guess.

I gave smoe away here last year (the fakes from China)

They're underweight and way too thin. Not deceptive at all. As I remember, they were all 1840 -1841

They are so plentiful as to be ubiquitous image
