How's the market for gold coins doing?

Just read the Hartford show report which said that gold wasn't really moving.

I was curious if others were observing the same or if Hartford was atypical. Is the market for gold cooling?

Anybody and everybody please share your thoughts.

Oh, please identify yourself as either a dealer, collector, or Ferengi.

Select original rare gold coins continue to be purchased with enthusiasm by collectors and put away for a long, long time.

I was ready to snipe this and backed out last night because I thought..... NO WAY, this is a newbie jerkin the market upwards .... or is this a sign of times to come and will it affect PCGS price guides ?

    E-BayWatch/ Gold

This is supposedly a coin worth under $475 by pricing guides and sells for $513. Do the math image Stupid Money or Market Moving ?

Well I just sold an AU58 Half Eagle that should have been worth $350 max for well over $500. I would say it is pretty strong.

Hmmm.... I clicked the link after I replied. This is the one I was talking about. Pretty cool that other forum members are watching. image

I wonder if this would have done better if I used my new camera instead of the computer scanner....... Oh well.

Two days ago, I put a common date Saint in PCGS 63 and a common date $5 Indian in ANACS 58 on the BST board. Both are excellent original coins & very nice for their respective grades. My asking prices were between Bid and Ask. Both were bought within the hour. Not bad!

Can't say about others, but my impression is (and I do watch and play) that folks are gathering their nuts and storing them away. RYK's impression is closer to what seems to be going on except not just for rare gold...any MS pre '33's are quietly going into various little safe places for a while. The higher the grade...likely the longer it will be before they see the sun again. Grabbing what I can while I can but buying in an up market for a salary guy requires dedication. JMHO
  • This thread makes me want to go buy some more type gold.

I think gold is pretty hot right now.....

Was looking for a few gold type coins in MS-62 grade and was not able to find anything where I thought they should be.....

Going to wait a bit to get the cash flow back up and try again in a bit.....

  • overall i think that the gold coin market is very strong right now. i do not think that you should take my earlier comments about the Hartford show and use them as a market barometer. Hartford is a small show that is comprised of average album collectors. the average album collector is not looking for gold.

judging by ebay, many fresh faces are attempting to buy gold
coins. this has lead to competition and higher prices.

the gold coin mentioned above on ebay was bought by someone
with a feedback rating of 7...
  • BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
feedback was 7 but he paid within minutes so hopefully everything will go smoothly. Someone with a feedback of severalhundred forced bidding over $500.

    becoka,

he was probably sick of snipers taking away the good coins,
so he made sure he won it. to a newbie, what is another 25-50
dollars for a coin you want? pockets full of cash with a big
    adreniline rush when you win!

    i resemble my remarks :-/
  • Generic gold disappears in rising market and comes out by the buckets when it starts to fall. Most "rare" gold in MS is not rare at all. Look at the pop reports for MS64 libs etc. Depending on the direction of the market, you could get killed buying in now or you might do OK in a rising market. But as far as making a big killing, don't expect it, most gold has already had a huge appreciation factor priced in.

I can't see a small gold coin priced at 4000 bucks going to 8000 because gold goes up. It only has about 200 bucks gold in it. So the current prices are very dependent upon the financial stability of the collector base and if you read any economic info you'll know that most of America is in debt up to the eyeballs and a lot of it is in ARM mortgages.

I'd but the prices will be much better in 24-48 months
  • i am on the gold bandwagon for now. economic conditions warrant rising gold prices imo
