I agree with you regarding your PCI silver eagle. See the mintage on the insert? PCI gave it an estimate and that tells me the coin was graded in 1991.
In 1991 PCI plastic cores would sometimes tone coins, usually American Silver Eagles. I've seen a few where the insert also states, "100% White" yet have rings of color like yours.

Some are pretty wild looking!

Probly not since it was not likely put into the holder for the purpose of toning the coin.

That is a very interesting coin. Also, I thought AquilaRose's question about whether or not PCGS would slab that coin intriguing. BAJJERFAN may be correct, but it would be VERY interesting if you'd ask HRH this question on the "Q & A Forum" and include the picture of the coin. I'd be very interested in his response.

Aquilarose, Mark....I've been wanting to cross it to PCGS. I am not about to crack this coin out and send in raw, even if I do believe that PCGS would holder it.

Solid...The reverse doesn't have nearly as much rim toning.

Here's a another green label PCI holder that has toned a 1958 frankie. imo
I couldn't capture the strong luster or color.

It's an MS64. I also plan to try to cross the Frankie to PCGS.

That ASE is less likely to get BB'd if sent in still in the holder than if cracked out IMO.

You may be right Bajjerfan.

I have a second ASE in a green PCI holder with the exact same toning....even each band of color is the same. The second toned ASE is not quite as dramatic as the first ASE that I posted. The PCI label states 100% white.

Now that I think about it, I should have "if sent in raw" . A crossover is the way to.

By the way fivecents, I think the toning looks cool on both coins from the pics.

As for the coin in the OP, I think I am more shocked by the grade than the coin - how bad does a newly minted ASE have to be to get a 67 from PCI?

I think this one largely was toned in the holder. It's in an old ANA blue label holder.
