My pleasure. I wish I still had the image. The phantom D is an interesting phenominom.

Here is a poor photo of a phantom D. I was lucky to save a box of 1998 cents and found a number of Wide AM's amongst them.

And as luck would have it, they all pretty much have the phantom D on the obverse as you can see in this pic.

You're right, there isn't anything on my site about the phantom D cents. I did happen to write about it in the book, but it hasn't made it to the site yet.

The phantoms are known on 1997, 1998, and 1999 cents. The 1997 cents are ghosted with a D and are very common. The 1998 cents have a phantom blob that some people call an S and they are somewhat scarce. The 1999 cents have the ghost of a D which is actually quite strong, and these are scarce. I have only seen the 1999 coins in mint sets.

They have received limited following, mainly hyped by certain dealers who ran into a batch of them and consider them valuable because they have them. Most collectors have an unexciting attitude about them. At any rate, they can be found in change (at least the 1997 and 1998 coins can) and shouldn't bring much if any premium value.

Described on page 279, photographed on page 281. The 1999 cent on p. 281 is from a mint set.
