People laughed at me for paying ‘full boat’ ($400) for a MS semi-key Morgan OGH/CAC about 6-7 years ago. Nobody wanted to buy it. Retail was around $225 at the time. Today retail is $1150 and that doesn’t even account for the OGH/CAC combo premium! One of the smartest things I ever did!!
Edit to add: After further research…The coin was selling for $275-$325 at the time I purchased it.
The fact that “retail” increased substantially over about a 6-7 year period doesn’t necessarily mean that paying “full boat” at the time was a good move. There are other factors to consider.
I think a more than 300% increase in that short timeframe is a pretty good return. The fact that OGH/CAC combos are on fire, right now, adds a whole ‘nother dimension, too.
I think it’s a very good return, too. But is that your sole criteria for determining whether you paid too much when you bought something? Depending upon market conditions over time, you can pay too much, but make a nice return or buy at a bargain price, yet still lose money.

True. Timing is everything. Luckily, conditions have been favorable, historically. Paying a little extra for quality helps, as well.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍
The haggler gives the seller a chance to move the coin and get cash flow. If the coin is in the green (positive margin from the transaction) it might be time to move it and get the sale.

Thanks for your kindly reply. All I am saying is that the old adage - 'you get what you pay for', very well applies to buying in numismatics. I am happy to pay full boat plus for the nicest coins, if someone offers me a coin for below full boat, it gives me pause bc likely there is an issue with the quality of the coin. The best 'deal' is not the one I have paid less for, but the one I have paid more for. That has been borne out over 2 decades of buying and selling numismatic items. Pay less than full boat, you are probably getting far less than full boat quality. Some would call it 'dreck'. Just sayin'..............
In terms of my 'smart enough' abilities, I have a PhD and many would agree that my skill set to analyze complex problems such as the value of coins is pretty darn good.................

There’s a very large gap between the nicest coins and average ones. And the same goes for ordinary examples compared to dreck. No need to imply that coins bought for less than “full boat” money are dreck, even if the buyer happens to have insulted the very large majority of posters here.😉

Good point, and you are very correct, I just let the poster get under my skin abit…………..
The trick is to be able to discover quality before it’s been stickered, lauded, praised, exalted, acclaimed, heralded, recognized, griffed, starred, plus’ed and revered. it’s nice to be able to do that from time to time without having to pay ‘full boat’ in the process. That’s why they say that ‘knowledge is power’.

But your comments - such as the one copied below - directed at those who do things differently than you, is extremely insulting. I think some people take things a wee bit to serious. If you see a coin you like and are able to get it at a price you are comfortable with, that is all that matters. Everything is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to coins.

Exactly. I try to get the best price possible. It’s called looking out for your own best interest and is a normal part of any business discussion whether personal or professional. After I’ve done that; I’ll buy the coin, if I feel the price is reasonable. And yes, I’ll even pay up, sometimes by a large margin, if I really like the coin a lot and, especially, if it is a rare buying opportunity. I have done that more than a time or two.

I have paid MORE than asking price on many occasions, as I felt the dealers were not asking enough. Sometimes it’s about more than paying the lowest possible price on a single transaction.

It's possible to be among the most sensible and smartest people in the world, but that won't necessarily get you the best coins.
I'm sure not every dealer runs his business the same way, but there's one I know who, when he gets something special in and he's figured out how much he wants for it, makes his first calls to buyers who'll say "I'll get you a check". The guy who haggles doesn't get a chance to make a counteroffer unless it ends up being rejected by others. The best coins usually don't last long enough for that to happen and the last guy ends up never even hearing about the coin.
It’s very well known that a fair number of the big dealers will not negotiate when they offer fresh coins for sale. There’s nothing wrong with negotiating when a coin has been in their inventory for six months but with a haggling approach regarding fresh coins good luck finding truly nice coins.

That has been my experience too. The best coins, that are fresh, are pretty much haggle free and you pay what the dealers ask. If it is a recurring customer, I will provide a better price if I can. But if you want to buy something other than the best which are fresh, haggle on. So it really depends on how long a coin has been in inventory in my case and again in my experience, with other dealers. A method of insisting to oneself that under no conditions said me will pay full boat, means losing the opportunity.

I collect only Morgan dollars, which are very plentiful. Even the rare dates such as 1893 S, 1893,1889 CC etc can always be found in many different sources with ease .
I'm a very patient individual and it may take a litle time ( that im certainly happy to invest) to find the Morgan I want at the price I'm willing to pay. I have a collection that I am very happy with and that I'm constantly adding to ,all on my own terms.

I am clutching my pearls at the thought of " insulting the very large majority of posters here" due to the fact that I refuse to pay full asking price for anything.

You don’t seem to get it. Refusing to pay full asking price for anything isn’t insulting to the large majority of posters here. But your comments - such as the one copied below - directed at those who do things differently than you, is extremely insulting. Please feel free to clutch away at your pearls and I’m sure you bought them for less than “full boat”.

That's a factual statement, one that I stand by and if one feels insulted by that statement then i guess the shoe fits.
I was being gentle with my words as my opinion of those who insist on paying full price and those who refuse to negotiate is quite scathing.

Yeah, we've seen your dreck. You paid bottom dollar for bottom quality coins.
I also flagged your disgusting comment. You'll just have to live in your own head with your disgusting attitude. Enjoy the next day or two, your banning is coming soon.

That's cool. If the coins are easy to find, you don't need access to the special coins that don't show up on dealers price lists or at shows.
The economy is tight, fair is fair on pricing things and trying to find a happy medium should be the objective. The postal clerk even was complaining on how tight money was for her and her family today at the post office, I told her what I do to economize. Collectibles are a hobby not a necessity. I had an order returned to me, the customer said they did not get to the UPS store in time. He said for me to peel the RTS off and just put it back in the mail without paying more, I said that was unfair to the po. His response, missing the point I think: "Fair to the government my dude? Those workers get paid the same hourly rate either way…"

That certainly demonstrates that he was wrong to think you would stoop to insulting anyone. 😈
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.
You just now finally said that your position works for circulated Morgan dollars that you collect.I don’t think anyone would give you a hard time about that – but you’ve made it known many times that you consider all coins to be negotiable, which is simply not the truth as posted above when talking about fresh material or rare items – your mistake is that you took a specific area of yours, and made and have made a blanket statement numerous times that it applies to everything.
You have compounded that mistake and misunderstanding by throwing cheap insults to someone who knows and understands the coin business and coins more than you’ll ever know in your entire lifetime.

My strategy - I try leave some haggle room. I do agree a dealer may not be open to haggling with fresh material especially if PQ or low pop (where they have the only one in the room). If somebody wants the stuff cheap (at or near bid) they can go to a wholesaler (if one is at the show). I have taken offers from the haggling process if in the green on it, wanting to move it.

Where were those dealers relative to CDN bid?
Likely about 25 to 50% below.
That seems low to me. At that would shop around or do it blowout on the bay. Perhaps start the auction say 10–15 pct below bid. That guy at 50 pct below bid … wow. Had something like that happen to me years ago at show dropped those folks.

Sure is a lot haggling going on here over hagglers 😀
The haggler gives the seller a chance to move the coin and get cash flow. If the coin is in the green (positive margin from the transaction) it might be time to move it and get the sale.

Early in this thead i stated simply that i dont pay full price for anything and ever since have been insulted by several members here ,told i collect "dreck" etc all because i had a different opinion. As a result I have ZERO problems pushing back and being very blunt about how i feel about the subject. I have learned a great deal about many of the people on this forum via this thread and have to say its been VERY entertaining
You can't change history on a thread that can be read. From your second post, you stated that anyone who paid "full boat" had more money than sense. No one attacked you and made you defend yourself by insulting other posters. The "dreck" comments came much later.

Below are some comments that @MorganFanatic has made in this thread. If one believes what he’s written, the conclusion must be that he’s among the most sensible and smartest people in the world.
I’m not a believer.
“People that pay full asking price for ANYTHING have more money than sense
I seem to have struck a nerve with you ,sorry you are triggered
however i stand by my statement that people who are too timid to negotiate have more money than sense and
I laugh at the sad sacks who overpay.
I find it more than a little funny that people pay full boat i have to say
There is nothing in this world thats worth Full Boat
Nothing in this world be it coins, cars, guitars, homes etc is worth full boat asking price. NOTHING.
There is always room for negotiating, and i will find those willing to negotiate. Like i have said several times in this threat and I thnik it bears it bears repeating: Those who do pay full price have more money than sense.
If you arent smart enough to negotiate then that s a YOU problem”

Dear boy, The fact that you took so much time to comb this thread and find every remark I've made, then try( and i do stress TRY) to passive/aggressively insult me ( as well as stalking me on other threads and again trying to insult me there as well . and dear boy i cant stress enough that if you wish to insult me you certainly need to raise your game ) convinces me that
you have an excessive Obsession ( almost certainly homosexual in nature) with me.
A) you have NO life, No friends,no family and WAYYYY too much time on your hands
All i can say is that you are a sad little man,and I truly pity you.
Report sent.
Get lost.
That's a factual statement, one that I stand by and if one feels insulted by that statement then i guess the shoe fits.
I was being gentle with my words as my opinion of those who insist on paying full price and those who refuse to negotiate is quite scathing.

Those workers get paid the same hourly rate either way…"
Bully for you on Reporting me because your feelings were hurt, you are quite the Hero so thank you for your service!!!! Perhaps we can find you a Safe Space to protect your feelings in the future.

My dear fine friend , if negotiating for the best price i can get is "Disgusting",then i'll happily be disgusting.

I have no need to insult you. You do a first rate job of doing that to yourself with your own posts.

That certainly demonstrates that he was wrong to think you would stoop to insulting anyone. 😈

Mark is probably the nicest and most knowledgeable guy on these boards. He has my utmost respect. To attack him like that is reprehensible.

Trying to pick your pocket ..
