Do I have this Dominion of Canada 1878 dollar properly attributed "dc-8f"? and grades up to Fine??

It has one pinhole at the center, and in my opinion, minor center splits top and bottom of center. Thanks.

It looks like it is the dc-8f variety. Payable to Toronto with no series number.
Hard to tell grade from photo but I would say between VG and F

Love the older Canadian bills, most of them anyway ✌️

    I see an 1878 $1 DC-8f in either VG 8 or F 10.

  • Thank you, all. My first grade reaction was "VG", but then I looked at certified examples on Heritage and eBay and saw awful looking notes straight-graded Fine or higher. I really appreciate all the comments!

Before professional grading, most dealers and collectors would grade this note VG. I've seen plenty of notes like this in dealer sheets and online that listed it as VG. Just like today there are a lot of notes in VF 20 holders that were graded as Fine back in the day. At some point about 8 to 10 years ago, more and more notes started getting bumps in grades at the lower end of the grading scale. So at present, we now have a huge difference in quality between a VF 20 note and a VF 35. It almost doesn't seem right to call them both Very Fine. In my opinion, your note "looks" more in line with VG 10 than it does with F 12. Granted there is more to grading than just what we can see from a 2-D picture. To properly grade you need the note in hand. But based on similar notes and how they were graded, a note like this was called VG.

I am in the VG camp as well. My first thought on seeing your post was, that if I bought this note sight unseen based on F grade, and it was as worn as this one is, I would be disappointed. Not that this isn't a good note to own, but the condition would disappoint based on that description. If described as VG, it would be exactly what I would expect and I would probably think it was an awesome note.

  • Given the above conversation, I am lowering my current Fine guesstimate to VG+. Again, thank you all so much!
