Michigan State Numismatic convention Nov. 14-16

Did anyone end up going? I was there for a couple hours on Friday.

The event was held at the Oakland County Convention Center. The building was bigger compared to the Macomb County Community College venue. Half of it was blocked by a curtain. Some kind of arts and crafts fair was being set up on the other side.

Silver was the main theme. Lots of it. Plenty of Eagles and Morgans to choose from. A decent number of bust halves and a few Standing Liberty Quarters, Frankins and silver dimes. The usual silver variety. Saw a couple ms69 1995-W eagles. I don't think there was a ms70 there. Also a couple 2019 reverse proof eagles. Both versions and mintmarks.

Nothing for proof platinum or palladium eagles. Maybe one vendor had a few fractional uncirculated platinum eagles. Maybe quarter and tenth ounce coins.

Gold was kind of lacking at the show. Not much overall that was there. More St. Gaudens than Liberties for $20. More in smaller denominations in Liberties and Indians than the $20's. Again, not a lot. There were a few New Orleans and Carson City dates mixed in. I only saw 2 Carson City dates for $20's. No New Orleans dates in $20's. A few modern gold eagles. Might have been a couple proofs mixed in, but I don't remember any. Only 2 Liberty High Relief gold, a 2017 in OGP and a pf70 2023.

Lots of nice specimens to look at scattered throughout. HLRC had my personal favorite examples. Some early silver and gold with 1790's dates from the first few years of the US Mint.

I left at about 4pm, missing most of the work traffic on my way home.

Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.

I had wanted to attend but just found out about the dates being Nov.14-16 and not this coming weekend. How was attendance?

I wish they would switch back to Black Friday and the weekend following. I always loved having Black Friday as a coin shopping day! I quit attending since the change. I didn’t even know it was last weekend. It used to be a very nice show.

That's two people who did not even know the show weekend had changed again. Poor publicity effort on the part of MSNS.

I was out of town so couldn't make it. I too liked the Black Friday date.

Attendance was ok. There were people constantly around the majority of the tables. I think it would've been better if the show was held on Black Friday weekend, and more people would be there if they weren't stuck at work.

This was the third fall show in a row that wasn't on Black Friday weekend. This year was two weeks beforehand. I was under the impression that it was Black Friday weekend last year until I flipped through the pages of a Greysheet issue I got literally the day before the show. I didn't go because I took my mother to get a stint put in her heart. I was just exhausted that weekend to go. I didn't get any sleep since I just got off work when I took her to the hospital.

I wish they would go back to Black Friday weekend for the show.

Actually, I did. I was on the fence of buying something there in the days leading up to the show. I had an order through APMEX that fell through. I got an email from them the day before it was supposed to ship saying there was an inventory issue. They didn't have the coin in question, so I called them to cancel the order. That freed up some funds for the show.

Sold a ms69 1oz gold eagle and paid the rest in cash for this. It was a date that started to grow on me for the past several months. So, I jumped at the chance seeing what I believed was a very good price for the date.
