Whitman Expo Report

We had a table setup at Whitman. Retail traffic was slow. Saturday was just about dead, had to do more baby sitting with street traffic. Had a boyfriend / girlfriend couple playing with our raw morgans taking handfuls and just playing with them like poker chips.
Wed PNG/Dealer day was "ok" not great. Not a lot of wholesale. Thursday was good, Friday ok. Prices were very high for the "good stuff". I always expect to see pricing be stronger for good stuff, but a lot of this was not even close. Good coins are demanding premiums above CPG.
We did have someone steal a layfette dollar that we had to chase down.
It was a "good" show not great.

Sounds more like you had a bad show to me, but that is just my impression from what you wrote.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Sorry for all the problems you had there. Probably should maintain better control over your coins, keep everything in a case, only show them one at a time. Lots of expense setting up at a show like this. Be prepared for a variety of people, some good potential customers as well as rude ones and possible thieves.
Good coins are demanding premiums above CPG.
Firstly I’m sorry that you had a coin stolen…..but sounds like you got it back? If so that’s great. Hopefully the thief was dealt with. I didn’t hear of any security issues this time around but it sounds like the show wasn’t perfect.
Also, don’t mean to take your above quote out of context….but don’t we want it to be the case that premium coins fetch premium prices? To me this is something you’d expect to see in a robust, healthy market.
100% we want good coins going over CPG ! Thats a perfect indication of a good coin market! Junk sells at junk good stuff sells at a premium. We just noticed the prices were on the rise for these items (even what I would consider premium over cpg)
Oddly enough in the 50 shows or so we have done, we have never had a coin stolen. We had two people managing the table, cases, etc....even with standard precautions things can happen. Its also why I dont like having a lot of raw coins out at shows. Either way we got it back.

In accepting "dealer" applications, NGC used to require a minimum of 100K in assets in collectibles, I don't know whether they ever verified that. One of the reasons to set up at shows is the opportunity to buy fresh or opportunistic material. That's about the only benefit I found personally. With security risks, costs of travel, show costs, etc. you'd better have a lot of profit to justify all that. I've seen shops getting the fresh material and they have no reason to go to shows and are too busy to got through the process and to set up.
Where was your table at: I saw complete opposite. Folks were buying up gold like no tomorrow. Here locally at my shop gold and silver sales are slow, especially larger size. Not there. I saw numerous folks buying full 20 ct boxes of $20 gold, 1 oz gold, saw a lot of real coins get sold also, everybody I know national dealer wise told me they had a great show. I ended up buying a 1796 dollar and few other items, freind of mine spent at least 40k on collector coins. Couple of coins that peaked my intrest in first pass, were gone when I came back around.
