Matching the 5 1913 Liberty Nickels to Eric Newman's descriptions.
In the recent E-Sylum newsletter, there was a link to Eric Newmans "folder" on the 1913 Liberty Nickels.
One page was his descriptions of the 5 coins. It goes as follows:
- Brilliant proof. Dent on obverse edge next to the second "1" in date. Dent on the edge next to the first "T" of states on reverse.
- Proof. Several slight lines in the field opposite the twelfth star. High wire edge on reverse.
- Dull proof. Two slight lines in the field opposite the thirteenth star. Dot on neck opposite end of hanging curl.
- Dull proof. Surface of reverse much brighter than obverse. Dot on neck above chin level next to hair.
- Uncirculated. Dot in left center of neck at chin level.
Trying to match these up:
- Eliasberg: I have numerous images of this coin, but the True View really shows the two "dents" listed in his description
- Norweb: Seems to match the image below.
- Walton: Seems to match the image below. The True View does not show these "lines" as well.
- Olsen: Dot is visible in the image below.
- McDermott: Only one left.
The Norweb and McDermott are much more "circulated" now than I assume they were when these descriptions were written in the 40's.
Anyone have different opinions?

Great info.
neat. is that an image comp i drummed up years ago? seems like i recall putting that little arrow and the comment about pocket change. i've made so many different comps, i've kinda lost track.
i hope it was me as when i saw it, i thought, hey, that's not too shabby!
always wanted to do one with the newest images but i think someone else already did so on this forum. just gotta dig to find it.
