100% PSA Graded 1972 Topps Baseball Set #12 Registry - 140+ Lots Closing Today Sunday 1/31 on eBay!

Late1970sToppsLate1970sTopps Posts: 750 ✭✭✭

UPDATE - I decided to break up the set and place each card on eBay. Please go to the bottom of the thread to see the link.

Available is a fully PSA graded 1972 Topps Baseball set. This beautiful 787 card set consists of 4-10’s, 534-9’s, and 249-8’s. The set has an overall GPA with top bonuses of 8.668 and is listed as the 12the current finest set on the registry under the name MGT. As of April 19, 2020 the set had a Vintage Card Prices most recent sale value of $28,158 and a value based on the highest sale price of $37,851.

The set was compiled in 2008 by combining 1972 legend Frank Bakka’s second set along with Larry Emards’ (also known as King Kellogg) set. It was capped it off with adding some PSA upgrades from another partial set. The highest graded card and the best card that had the same grade from each of the three sources was used to make this set.

There are no half grades in the set as all cards were graded before the service was offered. I believe that many of the cards, if graded today, would come back higher. As a matter of fact, three of the four 10’s in the set were ones that were broke out of PSA 8 holders and resubmitted as part of free submissions associated with a collector club annual membership.

PSA 9 stars in the set include, #37 Carl Yastrzemski, #38 Carl Yastrzemski IA, #49 Willie Mays, #51 Harmon Killebrew, #52 Harmon Killebrew IA, #79 Red Sox Rookie Stars (Carlton Fisk RC), #130 Bob Gibson, #200 Lou Brock, #280 Willie McCovey, #285 Gaylord Perry, #299 Hank Aaron, #309 Roberto Clemente, #310 Roberto Clemente IA, #343 Willie Stargell Boyhood Photo, #347 Tom Seaver Boyhood Photo, #410 Fergie Jenkins, #420 Steve Carlton, #433 Johnny Bench, #434 Johnny Bench IA, #435 Reggie Jackson, #436 Reggie Jackson IA, #440 Thurman Munson, #445 Tom Seaver, #447 Willie Stargell, #448 Willie Stargell IA, #498 Brooks Robinson Boyhood Photo, #530 Don Sutton, #550 Brooks Robinson, #559 Pete Rose, #600 Al Kaline, #751 Steve Carlton Traded, and #777 Hoyt Wilhelm. There are also all the difficult to locate (low population) cards for the set collector.

The price for this nice set is $24,995 plus $300 priority registered shipping. This is nearly a 12% discount compared to the VCP last sale price and a 34 discount compared to the highest sale price. If you have any questions or need more information, please send me a private message.

I've attached a few scans of the cards that had values of in excess of $300. Thanks for looking!

Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

Bump to answer a couple of questions:

    1. Yes. I would take payments on the set. That is something we could work out.
    2. Yes. I would consider taking some trade for graded cards in sets that I am working on. I would prefer to receive 1/2 to 2/3 in cash.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

I would sell the set on Ebay or maybe cosign it to those "honest sellers" at PWC on Ebay. Just know since you are selling it as a complete set you will never get a price like you could if you sold the cards individually. What I would do is sell it on Ebay where people actually want to buy something and sell the star cards individually and you could sell the commons in lots let the buyer pick say 10 commons from a list. I think you will get more money this way rather then just selling the complete set.

Beautiful Cards and set. I was thinking one could probably but this set and then upgrade it to an all PSA 9 set for about 10 to 12K for an all in cost of about 35 to 37K. Then I tried to guess what an all PSA 10 set would sell for and I looked at PSA realized prices and did a back of the envelope calculation and estimated an all PSA 10 set would cost 350 to 380K. I didn't run this calculation through VCP, but what would you estimate an all PSA 10 set would go for? It is amazing given that on any given day many 9's could be 10's and any 10's coould be nine's depending on the mood of the grader or graders. And PSA 10 in 1972 Topps are a lot easier than in most 1950's and 1960's Topps sets except for maybe 1968 Topps 10's which are relitively plentiful/. Can soneone calculate in VCP what an all 10 PSA 72 Topps set would go for?

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,346 ✭✭✭✭

I don't think you realize how difficult it will be to put together an all 10 set. Some of the really low pop 10's ( there are quite a few) have gone for crazy money, and the HOFers just keep getting higher if and when they become available. A #79 Fisk rookie PSA 10 just sold for $20k 2 weeks ago; the #299 Aaron sold for $15000. I would guess that an all 10 set would cost in that range, but take years upon years to complete.
While this particular set has a GPA of around 8.7, there are only 4 PSA 10's. I believe that the opinion above, suggesting to break out the star cards...and I would add the semi-high and high numbers...to be sold individually. PWCC does an excellent job with the higher end cards and gets the most for your cards.
I have a somewhat vested interest in this set as I have a complete graded set also (not selling now) but would be interested in what prices this one brings. Good luck and I hope you do well with this.

An all-10 set isn’t even close to existing. There are probably at least 15-20 cards in this set without a 10.

  • PaulMaulPaulMaul Posts: 4,680 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was a little high, there are 12....

What about completing a 1972 in the other direction all the cards are in excellent condition and all star cards are graded by PSA at a 5 how much would a set like that cost? Not everyone has 200k to spend on baseball cards.

I like graded sets but if you think about it you could assemble the same set raw for at least $10,000 dollars less. Of course I realize the difficulty in finding cards that would grade a 8 and a 9 raw but if you did find these cards you would save a lot of money on each card. Do you collect the card or the grading label I collected cards not grading labels. If you got this set and cracked all the holders you would probably have the finest raw set in the world for 1972 Topps baseball. Who sells a PSA 9 or 10 raw answer nobody does thats why a set in this quality raw would be very rear indeed.

just curious......did any of the auction co's offer a special rate for listing with them. I'm sure it's going to bring them a tidy sum and wondered if they would sweeten the pot to get you to list with them. Whatever you do, it's a great set and I wish you good luck with the sale.

With you using the method of starting your auctions at a price you're comfortable accepting if you only get one bid, what has your sell through rate been like each Sunday? 20% sell? 40% sell? higher? lower?

    Good question.

When I decided to sell, I listed the entire set for sale on this board and also contacted a few dealers. For the most part, I received trade offers, offers to purchase select cards, or offers that were in the 50% to 60% range of last sale VCP price. While not expensive compared to others years, my asking price of basically $25,000 (80% of VCP) is a lot of money and not something that most people could do. I was hoping that someone who wanted the 9's (or a bunch of the cards) would step up, buy the set, and sell off the extras to reduce their cost. This is the same thing I did. Since I had the time and the free listings with eBay trying to generate business, I decided to break it up.

I had an investment to protect but I also wanted to move the cards. That being the case, I decided to list the cards at slightly less than than the average VCP price or the last card sales price. I always tried to list the card less than any other on eBay. Often I see that my starting prices are 1/3 or 1/2 the buy it now price of others listed which seems absurd. My bottom line was that I wanted to give other set builders a fair price for the cards while not screwing myself or losing too much money on those cards I overpaid for while building the set.

I also wanted to be fair on postage. I charge $3.50 for the first card and $1.00 for each additional card. The postage cost for me is between $2.84 and $3.05 for a card, the eBay commission is $.35, the PayPal commission is $.10, and the padded envelope costs me $.12. So I tend to break even on postage as long as I don't ship too many single cards to the east coast. If I sell multiple cards to the same individual, it helps and so far I've broken even on shipping.

It's early, but so for it has seemed to work. During the first week 55% of the cards I listed sold. During the second week, 69% of the cards I listed sold. There were a lot of new buyers in the second week and the number of people following me on eBay increased substantially. I can only assume that people saw what I'm selling and started watching my auctions.

The bottom line is so far so good. Out of the cards I have sold, I've netted after all fees and commissions (including postage) 106.4% of the VCP last sales price. That is a far cry better than the 50% to 60% I was offered for the entire set.

While this is a small sample, as long as the next couple of weeks go well, and I'm able to move the cards that didn't sell the first time at a reasonable price, I should do much better my breaking it up and selling each of the cards individually.

Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

Bump as I started listing the last 400 cards of the set.

These are the best cards that I had. Cards that were super sharp or that I thought of resubmission potential. If you like nice cards, I'm sure you will be happy with these.

I listed 72 cards on Thursday under my name. These cards will close on Sunday, October 25th starting at 2 p.m. Pacific Time (5 p.m. Eastern) and wrap up at 4:20 p.m. Pacific Time (7:20 Eastern).

Highlights of this week sales include cards of Carl Yastrzemski, Harmon Killebrew, Frank Robinson, Joe Morgan, Bob Gibson, and Reggie Jackson. There are also some tough leaders cards and lower population cards.

You can use this link to find all the items:

I will also be listing at least another 100 quality cards this Thursday, October 22nd.

Thanks for looking and good luck!
