The Los Angeles Angels announced today that starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs died in Texas this morning. So far no cause of death has been reported. He was 27 years old.

The Angels are in Arlington to play a four-game series against the Rangers. The first game of the series was scheduled for tonight, but it has been canceled.

Skaggs made his MLB debut at age 20 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012. He had been with the Angels since 2014, and appeared in 83 games for them. He had made 15 starts so far this season, his last being on June 29 against the Oakland A’s.

Update (5:28 p.m. ET): The Southlake Police Department has released a statement saying that Skaggs was found unresponsive in his hotel room this afternoon, and was pronounced dead at the scene:

I’ve been putting together a raw 1978 Topps high end set and literally just got to card #593. Dave Skaggs is from Santa Monica according to the back of the card and Tyler graduated from Santa Monica high school. His dad?

This SABR article goes in-depth on Dave Skaggs but doesn't mention a son playing pro ball:

Skaggs was married in 1970. Tyler Skaggs was born in 1991. While certainly possible, it isn't likely that his parents were married for 21 years before he was born.

True. But the chances of multiple big league Skagg players from Santa Monica that are not related?

Edit: so the article mentions Dave Skaggs moving away from Santa Monica at a young age. What a coincidence if they aren’t related. Skaggs isn’t exactly a Johnson or Smith.

Tylers father's name is listed as Darrell.

After his career he moved back to Santa Monica. So, it looks like there are two non related Skaggs families out of Santa Monica that produced big leaguers. What are the chances.

There is a mention that both his father and stepfather played baseball in high school and college but nothing about Dave Skaggs. I think that would have been mentioned, but maybe he's a relative if not immediate family.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
