The Orioles Chris Davis and the INSANITY of big money contracts

MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 4,580 ✭✭✭✭✭

Chris Davis scored a gargantuan contract in 2016. 7 years at 161,000,000. comes to an incredible $23 MILLION per season, through 2022. That's roughly $42,000 per at bat...assuming he plays all 162 games and get 3 ABs. So, in 7 games so far this season, Mr. Davis has proudly pocketed some $714,000. Ahhhh, life must be so sweet for such a poor performer, laughing all the way to his broker, Swiss chalet and perhaps the killer home in the Adirondacks.

Davis has yet to get a hit in 2019, is 0-17 and was roundly booed off the field in last night's Orioles-Yankees game.

Davis, who plays first base, was also tagged with PED usage in 2014, fined $961,475 and sat out 25 games. The Orioles are stuck with him through 2022. Considered perhaps the worst contract in MLB history, unless a miraculous turnaround happens, Davis will continue to hear the Camden Yards faithful boo him without mercy...and, deservedly so. He must really, REALLY look forward to road games, ahhh, but so many home games yet to be played.

Not that the Os are the only team making such bone-headed moves, the Red Sox still owe Pablo Sandoval (among others) a fortune for years to come.

MLB contracts...tis a crazy, crazy craps shoot...only the player wins. Those who pony up their hard earned cash to enjoy a game and forget their problems for a few hours supplement such nonsense while trying to pull for their team.

Once upon a time...far away and long ago...bleacher tix in Fenway were $.75 per. Now, you will drop anywhere from $50 to the moon for tix. Monster seats are the cash cow of Red Sox coffers. Those that have a couple of kids (or more), you know, those that want a pennant, cotton candy (uber sticky), Fenway Franks, cokes and ice cream...yup, those who get bored by the 5th inning and wanna go home...prepare to be hammered for an easy two or three Benjamins. Guess who goes to the concession stand and misses the home run? Bingo!! YOU. Oh yeah, the parking, which is tighter than a football team in an elevator, will bust you for more.

All this to pay for the primadonnas. You know, those elite non-performing dudes in uniform.

While Fenway is unique, the best seat is in front of that 65", or like my neighbor ELEVEN FEET wide screen. Free parking, no waiting lines, food is great, no driving and click, game ovah, not to mention A/C and in your recliner.

    Batter up! :)

Hey Paul...have a great weekend. Clams anyone?

Al I have a Bleacher Seat ticket from 1980-1981 and the ticket price was $3.

I like the Cleveland Indians approach. starting around 1990 they pumped a lot of money into their Farm League Teams, built a new facility in Florida and eventually moved out to Arizona where they did the same thing. instead of paying large sums to players they've developed their own talent, waited till it was a proven commodity at the Major League level and then tried to lock guys in long term for 4-5 years. they will go to arbitration or re-negotiate, but seldom cave and give in to the huge contract.

while they build they also spend judiciously on proven players as free agents to supplement what they have developed, usually 2-3 guys every year. the "system" has yielded guys like Trevor Bauer, Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, Carlos Santana and Corey Kluber. much of the "development" in the early stages has been with other Teams and the Indians shrewdly acquire guys in trades when their "devloped" players want to hang the Team out for an expensive, long term contract like what Davis got.

it is hard to argue with the approach, especially when you consider that Cleveland is a shrinking small market without the TV revenue available to the large cities. the frustrating thing for us fans is when a player like Lindor reaches his max-contract point and we know the Team won't ransom themselves for him. player loyalty disappeared when free agency arrived. the MLB owners used to be in command but now the players(some of them) have the advantage. somewhere is a compromise where everyone wins and the fans are happy.

Totally agree. It's plain stupid to leave your house so you can spend hundreds of dollars for worse seats, 20 dollar hot dogs and drinks and sit in the sun with no A/C! And it's not even interesting until the playoffs anyway!

This from the Baseball Reference website. Behold Jacoby Ellsbury's income stats. Pls be sure to see the mega stat at the bottom where it states his "career to date"...yup, that is $147,659,142. And Jacoby is on the what appears to be the perennial DL. Can't blame him for jumping ship from a paltry, barely surviving $9m to the Yankees for $21.1m good on ya Jacoby.

I saw the Orioles scored 12 runs and figured the streak must be over. Nope 0-5.

0-49 for the season, poor guy. 😂

0-49 should be some kind of deal breaker! Maybe MLB owners will start putting some clauses in these huge contracts!!

0-28 for the season. 0-49 dating back to last season. Still, it's been bad. Granted he has hit the ball hard in recent games, just right at guys. One has to wonder how long they let this last before he sits the bench majority of the time. On the bight side, Villar and Mancini are both raking to start the year.

Depends on number of PAs. 300+ PAs, the lowest was .159. 500+, it's Davis at .168.

Maybe they should pay players on performance......that would be a novel idea.
So much a hit....so much a RBI....so much a HR....etc etc etc. Right now Chris Davis would be going hungry!
