Day of sadness December 8, 1980
On the anniversary of the shooting of John Lennon, post a coin or medal with John.
This is the unique 5 pound 2010 Lennon gold coin, Tyrant collection.
From the Tyant Collection web site (errors fixed by me):
Elizabeth II, “John Lennon” Commemorative Proof Gold 5-Pounds 2010 PCGS-graded PR69 Deep Cameo.
Elizabeth II, House of Windsor Queen 1952 to Present
Older portrait of the Queen. “Yoko Ono Presentation”. This is a unique specimen struck in gold specifically as a gift for John Lennon’s widow, as noted on the grading insert. All other known examples of this unusual coin, featuring a large portrait of the musician, were struck in silver and copper-nickel. Yoko Ono auctioned this coin in order to raise funds for charity. Mintage in gold: 1 coin.

I was at the University of Illinois in Chambana and heard the news while in a liquor store that evening. Lots of people went a bit nutty that night, there was considerable graffiti and minor vandalism.
The fact that I was a college senior in a liquor store on a Monday night probably does not say a lot for the overall quality of my study habits.
I was delivering mail the day after and somebody spray painted "Another one bites the dust" on the side of a restaurant.
It was indeed, a strange time.

The interruption of Monday Night Football was regrettable.
I remember going to the NY International that weekend and going down Central Park West by the Dakota and seeing all the Police tape and barricades up on 72nd St in front of the building and the cab driver told me what it was all about.
It was a good game if I recall correctly.

Here's an interesting medal of him that I sold earlier this year...

That was a very unfortunate turn of events.

I had recently relocated to Barbados... and was blissfully unaware (Thanks to several rum and ginger ales) until days later. Never much of a fan anyway....Cheers, RickO
