Notable Uncommon Common Coins

ConnecticoinConnecticoin Posts: 13,169 ✭✭✭✭✭
Almost every common classic coin has condition rarities that the registry set builders chase.

However, there are some condition rarities that are so exceptional, that they stand out from the rest. The most notable one I can think of is the Stewart Blay 1919 Lincoln Cent in MS69RD -- not only the most exceptional common mintage 1919 Lincoln Cent out there -- also the highest graded WHEAT CENT!

That is an exceptional looking Lincoln Cent, however I do not see how it is an MS69. It looks more like a 68 to me.

I always considered this gorgeously toned, nearly flawless 1943 PCGS MS68 Walker (from the former "Cajun" collection) to be the finest Walking Half of all:

I keep staring at the Lincoln cent. Amazing.

That Lincoln is amazing, but I'm in the MS68 camp.

There is something growing on the "D" of GOD, and there are hits on various parts of the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" text on the reverse.

An exceptional conditional rarity of a coin, yes!!! MS69? No, IMHO.

I think the fact that the image is the size of a dinner plate makes the very tiny ticks on the coin look huge. If you had comparable pictures of the MS68s next to it, you likely would see the difference.

I am very capable of interpreting large photos.

Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing coin -- but it's not an MS69 in my opinion. If it were dated 2014 I think it would be in an MS68RD holder. And, there is something growing on the "D" of "GOD", regardless of how small it is!

Perhaps. Here are a couple of Blay's MS68 RD coins -- images not as large, but look as good or maybe even better than the 1919! Although the 1923 looks like it has a decent size hit (or planchet flaw?) on the head relative to the 1918 and 1919.

FWIW most silver eagles in MS69 holders have more things wromg with them than that

I think they are in OGHs, so the owner might want to send them in for reconsideration image Mr. Blay used to be quite a colorful participant on these boards, but it appears he has not been here in quite a while.

This one is ONLY a MS68+ - Ex Sirna, Sunnywood, Simpson - don't know who has it now - but this is the finest toned widget that I know of.

Perhaps not as nice as the other coins posted here. Maybe it doesn't qualify but it's one of only two coins NGC has graded MS68 6FS. Tried to reclaim it when it appeared in a Heritage auction catalog but...... I believe I have a few other uncommon condition and strike rarities in my collection which there are many pictures of in the BST.

This one is notable for the price, mystery and all the discussion it's caused:

  • RogerBRogerB Posts: 8,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

Properly graded gem BU 1969 quarter. (i.e.: MS-67)

  • RogerBRogerB Posts: 8,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

The "1933 half" above is also notable in that it is counterfeit..... :)
