Put aside ...price... Esthetic appeal only.
I've owned high reliefs but never a proof Morgan.
assume high AU-MS63 Saint and ...nice... (65-67) Morgan proof.

I'm in the "fun to look at" phase right now.

Point the way, folks. :)

edited..... NOT the 1895 proof Morgan.

No question at all. Only dollar PR to compare for numismatic "story" is the 1895.

I would rather have the 1895 Proof Morgan than the Gold coin. But both are great coins!

There is a huge difference in price. It's hard to get into a High Relief, even a not so nice one, for less than $7 or $8 thousand. I bought a Proof Morgan for $4 thousand, which was Gray Sheet bid at the time, the price promptly dropped.

There is a lot more history around the 1907 High Relief $20. It is a numismatic landmark, despite the fact that it might be the most common, very expensive coin in the world.

Please SKIP the 1895 Morgan proof.
I mean, thanks for the vote of confidence, but ....no...just no on the 1895.

    heh

There is no need to buy an 1895 Proof Morgan unless you are putting together a set.

I disagree. However I may be seriously misinformed. Which coin has the potential to be the best investment over the long run?

Since I'm spending YOUR money.....buy one of each.

But I voted for the high relief Saint.

While a proof Morgan would be nice....just seems to me that there isn't THAT much difference between a proof, and a well struck, well preserved, high grade, common date Morgan. At least not enough difference for ME to shell out the money. (I'm one of those proof skeptics who thinks they are "cheating"). ;)

Gold for me, would be the way to go. I would not mind having a Morgan proof either. So maybe the answer should be one of each.

    Good luck deciding.

Skip: Forget the investment potential. the 1907 HR to me is a no-brainer.

That coin sings, man! Like a bird on a "wire".

gold. if you see an awesome morgan in the mean time then go for it.

  • topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well there are certainly enough High Reliefs compared to nice proof Morgans so I don't think they'll run out.

Not necessarily for "investment" (shudder....heh) but for LIQUIDITY, there sure seems to be no contest.
Hmmmm....but then the plethora of goldies aren't ...SOLD... ones.

    Dang, curiouser and curiouser.

    I think I'll go for a medal. ;)

...I would take the Nice Morgan Proof...but only because I Love Morgans and I have never owned one...and when I get one it's gonna be the Nicest that money can buy...and plus its now obvious to me that I know nothing about numismatic gold...when the time comes for me to collect that, I'll take one of the Pro's out for a steak dinner, hand them a big fat envelope and then wait ;)

The HR would be my choice.

The only proof Morgan I have had was a 1904 if I recall correctly.
It was NGC and nice toning and I sold it really quickly.
I think I had it for a couple of days at most.

I was at LB last week and there were some REALLY pretty proof Morgans. I think you could get a really attractive example with a nice cameo effect, maybe some color, too.

I thought you were over on the dark side now?

Definitely the gold HR..... Such a beautiful coin. I like Morgans, but even a proof cannot compare to the gold HR. Cheers, RickO

Well, I've wanted a PR Morgan for years, but have a high grade DMPL that has more or less satsified that urge. Sooo, I'd have to go with the HR $20.....gorgeous coin and out of my reach for now.

I always figured the high relief was out of my league so I always think that the proof Morgan attainable. And if not collecting a set of Morgans, one proof in the box of 20 would be fantastic!!
