Raw Peace Dollar Sets are easy and inexpensive to build in one day

Last year I inherited a bunch of raw silver dollars when my dad passed away which I know he had for at least 60+ years. (Some Morgans but mostly Peace dollars) I know he told me once that we had carried one of the coins all over Europe during WWII. I can also remember playing with the coins when I was a kid and it may have been one of the reasons I become interested in collecting coins. Anyway, I sorted through them a few months ago and while I had a lot of duplicates of course, I found I had almost "half" a complete set of Peace dollars. Mostly ~XF's but a few AU's to MS's too.
Anyway I got the bright idea of of completing the set. At the next coin show I was able to complete the set in less than an hour by stopping at few dealers that had raw peace dollars in their display cases. The whole set is probably only worth about 1k but it was fun and I was amazed at how easy it was to find all the coins in the XF to AU range. Put them all in an album and kept a list of those that came from my dad's stuff. As a coin collector, it makes a nice heirloom. Well 1/2 the set is an heirloom anyway.
Anyone else build off an inherited set of coins?

Well sort of. Folks would come into the coin shop and sell boxes full of inherited collections. I built collections off of that.

Great story thank you for sharing. In my case my father had passed away and my brother ended up selling all my dads collections of silver coins but it was during the peak silver prices. I have since bought all and more of the type coins my dad had. I guess it was my dad that put me on this course to where I am today. Collecting coins that is and I should make a decent inventory list for my successors so that they will at least have a good idea what is in my collection.
Great now I got another project but it should be fun getting everything on a computer program. Now I just have to find a good easy one.
I too inherited three coins. Two HK-19 So called dollars and one 1870-CC dollar. I was a coin collector before I inherited these but switched directions upon receiving them. I now pretty much only collect CC dollars.

Peace dollars are nice... I have not assembled a set - yet - but maybe. I have a few... still looking for the right 1921.... maybe after I get that one. Cheers, RickO
I have done a few sets since coming back to the hobby. My fav was this one. At the end there really wasn’t any challenge even with VAMs and OGHs included
