heritage auction results seem strong

1795 5 USD Large Eagle PCGS 62+ 276.000, last one was Pogue PCGS 64 at 260k
4 USD 1880 FH Stella NGC 67 CAM no CAC, PCGS says it would grade it 66 CAM, 750k
50 USD PanPac Octagonal PCGS 66+ at 288k, one year ago a PCGS 66 sold for 200k
1/2 Cent 1793 PCGS 65 that I grade EAC AU 55 and should not be in a PCGS 65 holder from the pictures I see, brought strong 240k

I thought these are strong results compared to what we saw the last 2 years during the Pogue sales.

It seems we are getting back to 2013 levels now.

I agree. A lot of prices were more than 2x PCGS list. Collectors must have more $$ in their jeans........

A very interesting auction with a LOT of great coins.

1.5 years ago it was 70.000 and I already thought back then thats crazy with a 66 being 5.000.

maybe I'm daft or out of some loop, but I can't see how the prices listed by the OP are even remotely reflective of the overall coin market strength or future.

Nothing in the original quote said overall market or future. It's a point in time or the segment the coins are in.

That being said. We talk about PCGS Price Guide indexes decreasing all the time here. Some 2x Price Guide prices can't hurt there.

    It was a joke.

    I missed the ;)

But I got it now. Thanks.

Zoins, don't be butt hurt over it, my inference was the same that everyone else probably made, that you were talking about the overall market moving with the rarity market. i don't see anything stated by you like "Geez, it looks like the ultra rarity market is getting stronger." the two are always linked and I don't think I'm wrong in saying that you were making a statement about the overall market showing signs of moving up.

saying otherwise comes across as a bit disingenuous. however, we are entitled to our opinions. have a nice day.

  • Seemed weaker to me IMHO in my area of focus, 2/2 on items I actively bid on. One half for of what sold in 2011. :)

Will be the first coins in 3 years I have purchased, still one lot to come up later.

@keets We've been talking about bifurcation forever on these forums. I really don't see that changing until the discretionary income situation changes for the majority of the middle class which I've stated before. I also think we're too early into the recent tax changes for there to be broad impacts on the hobby.

I agree that the extreme top end of the market may not correlate well with the general collector market.

But I was surprised that the top end COULD improve in such a short time with the number of great collections sold in the past few years.

Not only did those OP's examples show more strength but the 8 or so lowly $3K- 10K that I bid on went for more money than I thought.

I really thought my bids (all at higher than recent levels) would have been successful on at least 4-5 I bid on.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

too be sure, since I made my return to collecting in 1999 I haven't seen any period when the Hobby wasn't able to "absorb" anything that came up for sale. prices have advanced steadily.

People with lots of money are still competing for the finest known registry set material. Nothing new here. Everything else, I highly doubt it.

There were a total of 7 prooflike Liberty Head twenties in the 2018 Heritage FUN Auction.
The prices realized were very strong for these examples designated as PL.

    Lot # 6500 1890-S $20 NGC MS61 Prooflike sold for $4,800
    Lot # 6511 1894-S $20 NGC MS62 Prooflike sold for $3,600
    Lot # 6513 1895 $20 NGC MS62 Prooflike CAC sold for $3,360
    Lot # 6514 1895-S $20 NGC MS61 Prooflike sold for $3,120
    Lot # 6546 1904 $20 NGC MS62 Prooflike CAC sold for $2,640
    Lot # 6548 1904-S $20 NGC MS62 Prooflike sold for $3,120
    Lot # 6555 1905-S $20 NGC MS61 Prooflike CAC sold for $3,600

For non-prooflike coins, all of these dates are considered common dates in the MS61-MS62 grade range, so these prices are 2-3x’s higher for PL examples. I think these results demonstrate the strength of the prooflike gold market which has taken off in recent years.

Here is one of my favorite PL coins…
