Not that these coins will ever really circulate, but I carried these around for a couple of years.
The reverse of the Shield design apparently wears very rapidly.
Wow! I was not sure how durable that thin copper coating really was. I guess it is just meant to keep the zinc covered for its one way trip to the cash register so it can be given out as change-makers, never to be returned to commerce again in many cases.
I have never carried pocket pieces (coins carried for long periods and transferred as trousers change).... Though I usually have some pocket change (that lands in a pile on the dresser at days end). That is a surprising amount of wear, were they just the two together? Or were they with other coins in your pocket? Cheers, RickO
Great little 'experiment" here. looks like these things can only acquire about two years worth of wear and tear before the plating is compromised. Of course, they don't really circulate so it should take about thirty years to get two years of wear. Once the plating wears through the coin will quickly turn to dust so we'll never see very old zincolns.
I guess this is part of the reason the '80's cents are not seen so commonly any longer.
Just Another of the many reasons to get rid of the $.01 it just doesn't make any cents to keep minting them. (Pun intended) just a waste of money and resources.

Usually I have other coins...several at lkeast, but I usually carry my well-worn 2007 Washington Dollar which I got brand new and is now a g/AG.
I like to see how the coins wear....I know that may be a bit strange.
Good on you for carrying these cents, and sharing results. Very interesting- I wonder if the mint has tests that are run to gauge wear, and if so, what sort of method they employ to develop wear on coins?

Isn’t that exposed zinc poisonous to humans??
Wow!!!

Metal detecting at beaches I find Zincolns only a few years old corroded to the point sometimes half the coin is gone.
