Coin Show Report - Arcadia, CA

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭

Spent about an hour at the Numismatic Association of Southern California (NASC) Annual Golden State Coin Show. (Whew...that's a mouthful!) Our own "illini420" is the organizer....though, he was away from his table, so I didn't see him!

Random Thoughts:

  • I almost didn't go for a couple of reasons. One, I dropped some $$ on an online purchase earlier in the week, and Two, my memory for some reason had a negative check mark on this show. I don't know why....but I'm happy to report that assessment is in error. Maybe I was in a bad mood last time I attended? But I wanted to check out any new ANA purchases making the rounds, and this time I found many tables with much to be interested in. If I still had that $$ in my pocket, I probably could have spent it here!

  • A revelation: About a month ago, I decided to upgrade my loupe, and bought a Zeiss D36. It's one of those compound lenses that can do 3, 6, or 9x magnification. In the past, I swore by my cheap B/L 5x packet magnifier for first looks, with serious backup magnification being a 7x B/L Hastings Triplet, and a 14x B/L Coddington. Well, let me just say that the 3x Zeiss lens is just perfect for that "first quick look" at a coin....and it has essentially all of the capabilities of the rest of the crap I used to haul around, in one unit, and with much bigger and better lenses! Should have done this years ago....

  • I often complain that when it comes to VG-XF circulated Walkers, when you see one, it's always either a 1921 (P, D, or S), or a 1938D. Nothing else exists. :) Well, I found something different at this show, and as an added bonus, it was even a date I NEEDED....1919D. Honest wear, deep gray color that it should be, nothing distracting beyond one little black spot. An Honest F-12. Now, I could maybe go F-15 before the price starts getting outside my comfort zone, but beggars can't be choosers. I knew I had to buy it. To top things off, the price quoted was about 60% of PCGS price guide...(which I was mentally willing to beat, given my issues finding anything at all!) Very happy with this purchase. Down to 6 coins to complete the set!

  • My other purchase was an 1813 Bust Half, VF-35. VF seems to be the area that my wallet is happy at, and this one has the nice die clash that the 1813 coins sometimes have, with the shield lines visible on Miss Liberty's neck, and the E Pluribus Unum visible below the bust. The quirky attributes I was looking for! Still need to do an Overton on it, but it could be a pleasant surprise too. The dealer isn't a Bustie expert, and says he just got a run of them graded at the ANA. (Old lady only drove it church on Sunday?) Anyway, I like the look, even if it is maybe a shade or two lighter than it probably should be. If I had to guess, it would be worthy of an XF grade with a little darker color....

Anyway, I enjoyed the show. Some of the same dealers I see around here in "The OC", and some totally different dealers. Nice feel to the venue, and with more money in my pocket, I might have gone for that 1878 8tf Morgan, and Grant Commemorative as well! (Not sure why I remembered it as a negative before this.... Guess the lesson learned is that every show is different. If at first you don't like it, check back next time!)

I just spent 20 minutes staring at it, and my Overton (Third Edition).

I'm more inclined, based on the positioning of the date, to say it's O-108 or 109. That's Obverse 6, with the second 1 much lower. It certainly doesn't look like the date for 110....

But 110 is the only one that makes extensive mention of the clashing, I'll give you that.

In any case, it's a pretty worn die, with little in the way of denticles remaining, AMERICA very weak, and the leafs merging with the rim.

I may have to make my best attempt at photographing it, and letting the local experts have a go at it.....

(I love Busties....I'm just in over my head at times). ;)

I started another thread with (poor) photos if anyone wants to make an attribution stab at the 1813 Bustie....
