Let's Play Guess the Grade, 1846-O Half Eagle. - No CAC involved. Answer Provided
Okay, this coin does not have a CAC sticker and it's in "the wrong holder." There will be no CAC commentary here. Be that as it may it is a very scarce date and mint mark combination with a "Coin Facts" estimated population of 90 pieces. Doug Winter says there are only four or five known in Mint State.
Here are the straight on shots. As usual with my photography the mark in front the nose is there, but it's not as big as it appears. Otherwise this is fairly accurate.

And here are the angle shots which you can interpret them as you like. Some people think that these are taken for the sake of hype.

For those who guessed MS-61, you are a winner!. This coin has really great eye appeal, and would be a very nice example of the No Motton $5 Liberty, which is a very scarce type in Mint State.

I like it as a NGC 61 although a little field and neck friction is present so there will be plenty of 58 guesses

What a beauty! Bill you have all the treasures!
Maybe 58-61?
AU 58. Marks/lines in the fields and slight rub in the hair.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Gold is tough for me, but I see very little wear and nice detail, minus the field chatter and I would say MS for sure and a high of 63.

I was thinking ms63, branch mint, looks new, minimal marks, high end of the bell curve. Must have been carefully kept to be in such good shape. On second thought, no glow of luster so probably 61-2.

MS61...I just sold my two 1846-O $5s to DWN...LOL
I can't tell what the luster would look like in hand but I think it is uncirculated and I would guess MS63
I think CAC would....

Marks in the field do not take a coin out of the MS grade ranges. While I see the "rub" others mention, IMO, commercially graded MS-61. Nope, just raised it to MS-62.
Looks MS to me, and being in a newer holder (Ok, I realize the gradeflation topic is about as beat to death as CAC), I would think NGC gave it an MS grade, probably 61 if not 62.

Whatever the grade is, it won't sticker, especially in that plastic.

A very desirable 62.
My first thought was 62.
+1
Oh, but CAC does sticker NGC plastic. I know it does not mean much to a lot of people, but they do.
I would guess 62 maybe 63.
62
Agree with RYK and others--commercially graded 62. Whether there is a touch of rub or not doesn't really matter in this instance.

I like it as an MS62. Nice NO HE.
On a good day 62, on a bad day 58. Beautiful coin.
Since most have guessed MS-62, we are all probably wrong...LOL.
On a good day, 62 or 58, on a bad day 60-61?
I'd rather have it in a 60 or 61 holder than a 58, regardless of how unsexy 60 is. There's almost a two fold increase in price from a 58 to 60.
My WAG = 62
Mint State for sure NGC would have giving that probably a MS61, the hit on reverse and the hit on the obverse star keeps it from a 62..so MS61
Good point. Money talks!
Should I end the suspense or leave it for tomorrow?
Let it run - not every one of the usual suspects can chime in on Sunday afternoon.
There's a crowd of folks who never check these things until they get back to work!
Not PCGS or CAC why even bother guessing?

62, wish it were mine. Mines a lowly XF cleaned.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
Took a deper look. This is for sure MS61 or 62.
Beautiful Southern Gold
Looks 63 to me.
judging only from the pictures I would say MS61 and suspect that what some see as rub in he hair is strike weakness.
MS62..... Don't care what plastic it is in.... Cheers, RickO
I like it as MS62. I'll guess it is in an AU58 holder.
61 at best, any higher and it over-graded! jmho
TTT
I guessed 63 but I only own 2 pieces of gold so like Jon Snow....I know Nothing
That's nice!
