The date looks good to me. Is the mintmark good? Is there any tampering (tool marks) on the edge directly under the mint mark? If flow lines appear on the mint mark that match the field around it, it could be an embossed mintmark.

You have to check everything with a 26-S. The bad people are getting better and better at their trade.

A larger picture - and one of the reverse - would be helpful..... try posting it with the magnification option the forum has (I have no idea how to do that). Cheers, RickO

The date looks good. But the mint mark looks almost TOO good.

This is a date that in higher grade can be found with an embossed mintmark so you need to study the edge of the coin below the mintmark to see if it h as been drilled out for the embossing tool to do its thing (think needle-nose pliers) and then filled and sanded smooth.

As a long time Buffalo Nickel collector, I would NEVER recommend a person spending money on a raw 26-S unless it's a low grade specimen which this one is not. High grade rare dates that are not certified are a scam waiting to happen. And everyone who is anyone knows the 26-S Buffalo nickel is a perfect example of this sort of scam.

Newcollect - I see by your username you are a new collector. If this is true, PLEASE don't spend more than a few bucks on this coin. Most of us here have an embarrassing story from when we first started collecting and how our greed to find a cheap key date left us ripped off and questioning the entire hobby. In hindsight we call it "paying your tuition" in order to gain knowledge in numismatics. However, none of us would wish it on a new collector.

Any coin worth more than a few hundred dollars should never be purchased raw unless you have years of experience AND can inspect the coin in person. There's almost certainly a reason this coin is raw and likely not something you can live with.

The Mintmark looks wrong. It looks like it might have been added. The one on your coin looks boxy like the 1909-S VDB.

I have three pictures of genuine mintmarks from 1926-S taken from Heritage. Compare them to yours.

    Hope this helps

Newcollect - $20 sounds okay. Not a big loss if the coin turns out to be a problem. Best of luck to you.
